Vitamin D - a reason to exercise outdoors

Why do we need vitamin D?
Vitamin D is important for maintaining our bones. Vitamin D helps with the absorption of calcium. Cavities are a sign of lack of vitamin D or calcium.

Where can we get vitamin D?
Milk is a good source of calcium, and most milk is fortified with vitamin D. Some calcium supplements come with vitamin D, too. If we exercise outside regularly , we make vitamin D from sunshine.

At my last dental checkup, I discovered that I had lost some bone in my mouth. This surprised me, but then I realized that I stopped drinking milk while on the Furhman diet, and I did not get outdoors much when I was working long hours on my courses.

So, I am resolving to get outside at least 20 minutes per day, as often as I can and drink enough milk to get the recommended daily amount (3 glasses per day for me).

    I did not know that cavities were related to lack of Vitamin D. I take calcium with vitamin D every day. I think I will go get a glass of milk! emoticon

    I found out I had a serious Vit D deficiency, even though I loved to be outdoors. A prescription dose brought it up and now I take an OTC supplement. I notice a change almost immediately in that my brain no longer felt "foggy". Definitely ask your doctor for a Vit D check if you are in doubt!

    I live in Washington State where the sun is not out very often in the winter. But i have noticed that running outside at least 3 time a week and walking out there the other 4 for at least 20 miutes like you said is very helpfull!

    I suck up any Vitamin D that isout there and it feels good. I have also thought about getting a happy light... emoticon
