This is my favorite bean recipe of all! Luscious. I do use canola oil to roast the spices, but you don't have to. The only things you have to cut up for the dal are one onion and 2 tsp. minced garlic. I use Pomi tomatoes, no salt, and add 1/2 tsp. salt to the dal, to cut down on sodium (your usual canned tomatoes are high in sodium). I also use regular yogurt rather than soy, just because that's what I have. YUM!
