Good Observation, Bad Stomachache

Wednesday, February 06, 2013

I was observed by one of the assistant principals today, and everything went well. I did a lesson on clothing items in German; I brought a basketful of clothes in and taught them the names, and then we played a game. The kids were great, everyone participated. I think it was the best lesson I ever taught; the kids actually asked me things in German, and they've only had one semester! I felt really energized afterwards, and the AP told me she really enjoyed it. Very cool. I've had a few observations in the past where the observer really didn't know what I was doing or why, but this one is really interested and positive. Nice change.
Unfortunately I'm a bit under the weather; my stomach is upset. I might have to take tomorrow off, but that's okay; I made it to the evaluation without getting sick, that was the most important thing.
I know I'm a good teacher, but (or maybe because of that) I really got worked up about the observation; I've been stressing over it for days. Now, I just feel happy and relieved - in spite of the stomachache.

Way to go. I understand the stress. I'm occasionally on the other end of the observation and try my best to minimize the stress. My observations are a follow-up to professional development programs I do so the observations are actually to evaluate US and how well we help the teachers. Nevertheless, I it is still stressful for them. Not surprisingly, the good teachers stand out, even when things don't go all that smoothly.

oh man just the words "observation" and "assistant principal" made my stomach churn. Those have never gone too well for me (in my opinion). First one I ever had, my principle was on his phone the whole time, the second one was 50/50 just because the differences in class periods were so different one boss loved it, one boss hated it.

Sounds like you did an emoticon job!

I hope your stomach feels better soon! Bless you for your teaching. I really do miss it somedays and at least I know caring people like you are stepping up and doing great jobs!

It's great when observations go well.

I hope the stomachache was due to nerves and you're not getting sick. I hope you feel better real soon.
