Nice day, rough ride

Wednesday, February 06, 2013

I had today off work and when I looked out it looked gray and a little ominous, but the temp was a balmy 45 F or so. What to do? Throw my bike in the car and head for my favorite bike path! By the time I got there, the sky was blue, day was fine, and off I went.

I'm not sure what went wrong...trail was very soft with occasional mud slicks and ice patches in the shade. I was exhausted early on, not sure if it was the trail conditions, something up with my bike (felt off though I couldn't quite put my finger on what it was), or maybe just an off day for me. I was feeling some aches in the area of several old injuries and ended up turning around early. Got back okay, bike tires and lower parts solidly caked in mud. Threw a chain (first time).

Still, I felt good to have gotten out. I'll take a closer look at my ride this evening and if I can't figure out what seems out of place I'll take it in for a more experienced evaluation. And the beneficiary of the short ride? My dog, who got to go on a nice long walk since I didn't want to waste such a great day!

I have a nice comfort-ride bicycle I bought a few years ago, but haven't ridden very much. The weather here seems too often to be either too hot or too cold and snowy for me to feel safe about riding. The recumbent bike in the air-conditioned Y seems to work better, despite the fact that I like to think I would prefer to be out on a natural trail. At 66, maybe I just need to have more self confidence.

Good for you for getting out there even though the conditions might not have been perfect!! 45 seems pretty nice where I'm from, too!

I hope to get a bike this summer. The little town I live in is perfect for an evening bike ride!

Your upbeat enthusiasm for bike riding gives me hope. I feel off my bicycle a few years ago. I hurt my fingers on my right hand, and I have had a difficult time getting myself back on the bicycle again. You are encouraging!
