Lately I've been trying to reduce the amount of carbs that I consume in a day, particularly at breakfast time (I know this is the best time to eat them, but its also the easiest meal for me to cut them...baby steps!) I had a health screening done for work in December. My numbers were pretty good, but my A1C was 6.1, which is considered in the pre-diabetic range. I have always had problems with my blood sugar, mainly that if I eat starchy or sugary foods with no protien my blood sugar will crash to the low 40s several hours later. My whole maternal family practically has diabetes (well anyone over 40 does!), but the last time I got a test done they told me I was fine. They didn't give me my numbers just said I was good. This time I saw my numbers so I know I need to make some corrective action to reduce my risk of developing diabetes. There was a health coach to meet with after the screenings and we went over what I ate and my activity level. The biggest thing she told me is to watch my simple carbs. I explained that breakfast is usually oatmeal, cereal, or toast. She told me that with my risks (and my low cholesterol) I'd actually be better off eating bacon than cereal for breakfast! This surprised me, because I always assumed cereal was a better choice than bacon, I know simple carbs aren't great but still!
So this really changed my thinking and lately my breakfasts have consisted of a protien shake (80 calories, 0 carbs, 20g Protein!), Lowfat Yogurt, and Sausage. I'd been buying brown and serve sausage that I can heat up at work, and it's pretty good but I wanted to find something a little lower fat. I decided to buy Jennie-O sausage to cook up and reheat at work, and WOW that stuff is good! I could hardly tell the difference between it and pork! I was really surpised, and think I need to start expirementing more with replacing things with Turkey. I trick my husband every now and then and will use it, but if he knows about it ahead of time he always likes it less (yet he can't tell if I don't tell him!) Silly Husband!
I'm on a three day streak of eating right again, and am very proud of myself for that. I've lost 2lbs (mostly water weight) so am getting closer to being able to move that scale in the right direction again. Hoping having a day off work tomorrow and the weekend doesn't derail me!
