"Our Rock Pile"

Tuesday, February 05, 2013

Do you know when the Israelites had the miracle from God to cross the river Jordan and he rolled back the water just like he had done at the Red Sea, He told Joshua to tell the heads of each tribe, 12 in all to pick up a large river bottom stone and carry it from the river to the other side and to set up a memorial with the stones after all had made it to the other side as a marker to remind them of the powerful thing they had been through and conquered on their journey to the promised land. It was not a statue or great huge monument; it was just a pile of 12 large stones.

I had the privilege to visit Israel and Egypt and the pile is still there today, because it has been protected over the years still there at a key place in their journey. We are on that same type of journey to our “Promised Land” so to say and what will we do to mark the places we conquered bad habits and unhealthy practices in our lives and made powerful changes. Like conquering drinking Soda Pop once and for all, and changing to Water instead, like facing that scariest of places “The Gym” and making it your own, like failing your plan so bad you think you can’t go on but you do and you actually get stronger, like going through something traumatic in your life and not letting it dictate your healthy decisions. These are things to remember, things to remind ourselves of when we feel weak and need a push.

We Sparkers need to make a marker like the Israelites did at God’s direction, so they could look back and say see “we conquered that” we are victorious! Then they would show their children those markers and recount what they did and pass it on to the next generation. Then the next generation would tell their children and on and on it went to teach the right way of doing things instead of the wrong way. To teach that they could face and be victorious over challenges that seem impossible to them. No it is not as big a miracle as God rolling back a Sea, but in my life many challenges I go through are just as important and life changing as what happened to the Israeli people.

I for one want to have those markers to say to my son’s & grandsons look this is what I did and this is what you can do also. I had plenty of time passing on my bad habits, weaknesses, failures to my son’s and I am trying hard to change all that once and for all. I think I will come up with something I can call my change markers, my big moments of Victory. Something that can be seen and then the next thing is “What is that and why is that there”? Then I will tell my story one more time, whether it is from my mouth or my son’s mouths to their sons and daughters, maybe a hanging picture on the wall or something. Think about it, what markers you have that show your times of Celebration and Victory that you can look back on when you need a reminder that you can share to anyone that asks. A good place I would think is a Picture. Maybe one on that day that the light bulb went off in your head and you said time for a change.

If you are interested in this topic here is the bible reference Joshua 4:4-7 but I would read 1-24 for a fuller picture. Also here is a web site you might like too, just copy and paste it into your browser. http://wordsinseason.net/2010/

Excellent blog! I think it's so important to share our experiences with our children and show them that we're constantly learning too. Seeing your parents set and achieve goals is inspiring! Love, love, love that rock pile. :)

Brilliant blog, Susan. I love the application of the stone markers the Israelites were commnanded to gather to our personal journeys. The change happening in our lives may not be as great a miracle as the Jordan River but we can certainly invite Him to journey with us. You've got me thinking about creating my own markers and attaching meaning to them. Mmmm....wonder where this will go.....
Thanks for sharing a very meaningful blog, Susan.

I love the idea of creating our own markers. you've given me a great deal to think about and figure out a way of implementing this into journey. Thank you for the inspiration.

Hmmmm...this has me thinking, because all I have as a "marker" is a gold chain that I was given when I got to my goal weight. That I plan to hand down to Clara, but I need something more permanent .

Excellent blog!

    Excellent idea!

I did a painting of a mountain goat and under it made "rocks" on which I recorded different scriptural or personal promises from the Lord and prayer requests, and their fulfillments. When I taught art class in a Christian school, I had the kids each make something similar. Stones of Remembrance - Rocks to remember that God IS our Rock! Blessings!
