My Son's In The Hospital With The Stomach Bug...

Tuesday, February 05, 2013

Last night my 24 year old son had to go to the emergency room due to the bad stomach bug that is going around. He got to the emergency room (with his girlfriend) at 7 pm. He had chest pains along with the nausea. He waited until 4 AM to get a bed in the ER! They found fluid around his heart and that his kidneys weren't working properly...all from the virus!

Last night I thought he went, got fluids and went home. I was surprised when his girlfriend texted me at 7 this morning! So we have both been here all day. His blood pressure is real low - 91/47. The good news is he got a lecture from the Dr. He is 5'8 and weighs 115 pounds - his bmi is 17!! He has always been on the small side but he is way too skinny. We have been getting on him about his weight - he always gets mad at us. Hopefully he will start eating more now. He is going to get a physical next!!

So, I have been here all day. I had a really nice salad, broccoli, white beans, pink grapefruit for lunch and hummus for snack. I had cottage cheese and a peanut butter nutrisystem bar (I always keep one in my pocketbook in case) for dinner. And I am drinking lots of water.

My bff's sister works in the ER tonight - she is going to come check on him for me. I am going to go home later tonight when his girlfriend gets back. I told him to take her out to a real nice restaurant when this is done!!

Thoughts and prayers for a swift recovery. I didn't know such a devastating version of the flu was going around. YIKES! Glad to know he's getting good care.

Happy Mothers Day to you. Stay well... One week until your big race!

I sure hope he gets well soon. My son is very thin too. He eats, but it is junk food. He skips meals, drinks too much caffeine and is a smoker. I am glad this was caught in time before there was any permanent damage to your son's heart and kidneys.

Good for you for not eating emotionally. You and your family will be in my prayers.

Sounds like things are on the upswing and (just as important) even tho you were stressed, you made health food choices. Well done.

That's scary stuff! Glad to hear he's in the hospital and not trying to take care of something so serious at home. Will keep you both in my thoughts and prayers. Hope he's better quick! emoticon

Scary! Good thing he went to the hospital and found out about the fluid around his heart. Now he can do something about it. I hope he recovers quickly. (Take care of yourself, too!)

Wow...some of these viruses/flus are incredible these days. Glad he went to hospital considering the virus is affecting his heart and kidneys. He seems to be where he needs to be right now. Hope is getting good care from the docs there and recovers quickly.

Thank goodness he thought to get to the hospital for it. I had read in the health news in sparkpeople about a bad stomach bug going around. Make sure to keep yourself healthy.

Oh my and oh my!! He is a skinny dude! No wonder he ended up in the ER with a tummy bug! It has been going around here too. I hope he is soon on the mend and home and eating and keeping it all in! I'm glad he will be getting a physical too. Good for you staying on track in extraordinary circumstances and under stress! Sending healing vibes his way!

Prayers for your son's recovery, both from stomach bug and from weighing too little. Getting a nutrionist in sounds like a good idea while he's a captive audience. emoticon Get some rest. emoticon

what a terrible ordeal! I hope that he gets better fast. Maybe you can get a nutritionist to come visit him in the hospital and spell out what kind of meals he needs to be eating or focusing on,
ehhh... terrible about the stomach bug. This is quite the epidemic :(
big strength and positive energy towards you and your family!
