Relapse is a part of recovery

Tuesday, February 05, 2013

I just read a Sparkblog from 2009 about a fitness instructor named Debra Mazda who actually lost 140 pounds on her own before getting into fitness. Here's my favourite quote from the blog: "Well, I did relapse many times. When you’ve been addicted to food, relapse is part of recovery. But I was able to get a grip on myself before re-gaining all of my weight and more. I stayed very focused on my goals and decided that I would succeed. This became a passion of mine and still is today, changing my life."

I love that. Relapse is part of recovery. I've relapsed lots. And the previous few times I've tried to lose weight, I've let the relapse take over and I gain too much weight back and have to start over. I'm sure that I've lost over a hundred pounds.... which would have put me at my goal weight a loooong time ago if I hadn't gained back 40 pounds twice and 20 pounds once. I kind of got off track this winter, but thank God, I was able to get back on it before too long. And now I'm losing again!

So you just have to get to the place where you can get a handle on your relapses before they can do too much damage, and not worry about the fact that you had a relapse. I think I'm on my way!
