READ to your children!

Tuesday, February 05, 2013

I asked my grandaughter, Lucy, not yet 4,
to tell me about her drawing the other day
(she only scribbles, really- fine motor is not her forte')
and she said (I had to write it down immediately):

"Up the steepest mountain,
through the deepest forest,
into the darkest cave,
guarded by a dragon,
there awaits the

This is a child who has been read to-
a lot!
Pretty much every day of her life.

Awesome. My grandson, age 6 is trying to write (with the help of his grandma) a book about a pigeon that wants to fly a plane. I guess it's the spin-off of Don't let the Pigeon drive the bus. Kids are so fun!

My grandkids have amazing vocabularies and imaginations and, yes, they have been read to every day of their lives. My daughter started reading to granddaughter when she was about a month old! It has definitely paid off!! Thanks for sharing some of your granddaughter with us---love her story!!!!!

So important to do this...we do this every night before bed. Bug knows several words by sight now and is even starting to sound out some of the words along with me.

How lovely! What a delightful little girl. I agree with you about reading to children: we've got pictures of bright eyed babies enjoying books before age 6 months!

What a wonderful blog! I hope you will save that story for Lucy for when she gets older.

Our little Rebecca is already accumulating quite a library, but at 11 days old and less than 5 pounds she is only interested in eating and sleeping. But my daughter has a huge love of books and I have no doubt that Rebecca will be read to every day as well.

that is great, I read to my son all of the time, and it just did not rub off on him, I am an avid reader, and Lucy will have a better imagination, and be able to travel the universe without leaving her own home, I love to read, and am so happy when I meet a child with the same enthusiasm. to say nothing about better grades in all subjects in school, if you can't read it you cant' do it. emoticon
