I read a while back about the "Monday Syndrome" -- the tendency we have to start a new diet "on Monday", get back to exercising "on Monday", renew our focus on _______ "on Monday". The article mentioned that Mondays were the busiest days at most gyms.
I have had Mondays off for a long time, so it was a natural for me to plan that as one of my gym days. But I went during the day. This week I am working full time, and so I took my gym clothes to go after work. Our office closes at 4, and I made it to the gym and was ready to begin my workout at 4:25 PM. That's earlier than most folks get off, so I didn't expect it to be crazy busy -- but boy, was I wrong! NEVER have I seen it so crowded!
I wanted to do intervals with strength machines alternating with the stationary bike. Have done that many times before (with bike or treadmill) --- I do 5 min on the aerobic machine and then go do 2 sets of 15 of 2 exercises (squats & deadlifts, biceps & triceps, etc.) then go back for 5 more min. of aerobics. Last night each time I left a bike, someone came and filled it -- and they weren't there for 5 minutes. I was able to find 3 different bikes before I gave up on that plan. Finished another 15 minutes doing mat work and ab work, did my stretching, then found an empty treadmill and finished 15 minutes there. Usually I stretch after I've finished the strength & aerobic segments -- but last night even the mat/stretching area was so full I was afraid if I left my spot, it wouldn't be open when I came back.
When my new work schedule begins in a few weeks, I will have T/Th afternoons off, and I guess I will go to the gym then. I had thought about after work on Monday (like yesterday) so I'd have Tues afternoon for errands and home tasks, but after last night, I'm not sure I want to fight the crowds like that. But then again, I must remember that it is only the beginning of February and the crowds will likely diminish somewhat the further we get from New Year's Resolutions! (Sad, but true -- many of the folks who began in January will probably not be at the gym come April, or June, or Sept.!) We shall see -- the one thing I promise myself, is I Will Be at the Gym 2x/Week -- even with the 25% increase in hours at the office!
