Root canal attempt #2 - FAIL (and more)

Monday, February 04, 2013

I just can't get a break. :(

First, I didn't even get to go home yesterday - worked flat out from 8 to 4, picked up kid, took him to the mall for crappy food, then to dentist, where DH came and got him just as the dentist was starting my procedure (at 6 pm).

Today should be a little better, although it will still be hectic at work. I'm going to try really hard to get to the gym for BodyBalance, depending on...things.

Dental phobics, turn back now....................

Dentist gave me heavy numbing - 3 shots. I got numb. Yay! He started drilling, got way into nerve. Stopped, fiddled around putting some kind of rubber dam thing on the tooth, couldn't find what he wanted, fiddled some more, finally got it in place. Rinsed the open tooth - I felt it. He couldn't believe it. Poked around, I'm like, "BELIEVE IT!" He put numbing agent INTO THE NERVE - nope, still felt it. Had to take all the rubber dam contraption off and give me another shot. That worked. He didn't bother putting the dam back on.

But - he couldn't finish the root canal. He said he felt resistance and because the tooth was so hot and had been through so much, he didn't want to push it. He got most of done, and then he packed it up with antibiotics and sealed it and referred me to the endodontist who comes 3 days a month for the "very difficult" cases. I have an appointment for March 5th. Yes, a month from now. Unbelievable. I broke this tooth in July, but it never bothered me until I went to the dentist in January. Now it hurts ALL THE TIME. Not to mention it's hurting my POCKETBOOK! I have already paid for the crown that they can't put on until the root canal is done. He didn't charge me for a root canal yesterday, but he did charge me to open the tooth and pack it. He didn't charge me anything last week when he couldn't even get me numb. So although I'm making lots of visits, they're not making that much money off of me. LOL.

Out of curiousity, does anyone know how much a crown costs in the US these days? I paid about $1500 for mine. I don't think my crappy insurance will cover any of it; maybe the prep. They'll probably cover 20% of the root canal.

I got home at 8:30 and went straight to bed. When I got up with alarm at 2:00 (reasons should be obvious - if not, read below), my face was still numb! But the tooth was starting to hurt.

Menstrual phobics turn back now..................

Still bleeding heavily. This is day 25. It's not as bad as it was over the weekend, when I was soaking through super-plus tampons in 1 hour. Now I can go 3 or sometimes 4 hours (but sometimes it's 2). DH is going to get me some iron supplements today. The OB-GYN still hasn't called me back. It's been 2 days. Time for a new doctor, methinks.

I have appointment with ENT surgeon on Thursday at the best hospital in town. (I only got in by knowing someone who knows his wife.) I will ask him for a referral to an OB-GYN. Maybe they can do my thyroid and D&C or ablation at the same time!! One general anesthesia's better than two, right? Although I'm not going to have time for the thyroid until the end of March, and I don't think I can take this period thing that long. Maybe it'll just stop...

On the positive side, it's hump day!

My last crown was around $1,000 I think. My H has to have all his root canals performed by an endodontist . They run about $1,500 each, then he goes back to the dentist for the crown. Yes, ugh.

Good luck with getting a new GYN that understands and can hopefully find a good solution. Looking forward to reading how it goes Thursday.

    Yikes...that sucks!!That's about right for a crown price-wise.
Definitely time for a new OB-GYN....this is not good!

Goodness sake! I hope things turn around for you, and soon! I'm in agreement, you need to find another ob-gyn. Someone that will actually keep in contact. Good luck hun! emoticon

Good grief, you can't get a break! I'm glad you're getting to an obgyn. Hopefully, that appt will go better than the root canal.
