Scaling Back

Sunday, February 03, 2013

Since beginning my weight loss adventure with SparkPeople, 3 weeks ago, I have weighed myself just 3 times. And I'm finding that for me, the result, not only on the scale, but on my psyche, has been very positive.

In previous attempts to lose weight, I would weigh myself every single day, sometimes more than once or twice a day. I was allowing the scale to be my main focus. I worried about every little gain and looked at it as a failure.

Not anymore! I'm scaling back! I'm using my scale only to help me track my progress, but am not allowing the scale to dictate my day or determine my mood. The number on the scale is just that, a number. Losing weight is one of the goals, but another is feeling better about myself in my body. Feeling better about myself in my clothes.

Using the scale every day can be very discouraging, especially if your body decides to plateau, not moving the needle on the scale up or down for several days. Defeat would have a tendency to overtake my head and my heart, changing my mood and my attitude toward success.

So, think about scaling back with me. Take your scale and put it somewhere difficult to get at, where you need to work to get it out, or take it to the neighbors, if you can't avoid the temptation to jump on every day.

I made the decision to avoid the negatives, by weighing myself only once every 2 weeks. Even if I only lose a small amount of weight, that's a positive result. My main focus is and should be on the food I've eaten and the nutritional values of that food.

SO many ways to judge success...the scale is just ONE tool of many. It is not all that reliable a tool either when you are on it too often...for our weight can vary for so many reasons. That number on the scale is not an absolute! The scale helps you see trends and have a general idea of what is going on...but there are so many other things you can and should do to measure your successes! emoticon

I feared the scale... I would go on it several times a day. Just to see how each avtivity affects my weight. But you're right - Scaling back!

I have an obsession with my scale and have tried to get my boyfriend to hide it but I just end up looking for it haha. I weigh every day but I find it helps me stay on track and I like to see the numbers change. I am hoping in the future that i won't need the scale as much but I'm also taking measurements so that if or when i hit a plateau at least the measuring tape will let me know I'm succeeding. I hope someday I do have the willpower to only check once a week or once every two weeks but for now it seems to help me stay focussed emoticon
