FEBRUARY GOALS: A&I Week 1 Blog

Sunday, February 03, 2013

It hasn't been easy to even think of goals this year. I'm experiencing a major flare-up of fibromyalgia symptoms including debilitating fatigue. As the weeks go on and the symptoms continue it becomes difficult to plan ahead. (And I'm not mentioning the incredible brain drain that accompanies having chronic pain and lack of sleep -- oh, wait - I just did mention it. When fog gets in your brain everything gets confused. )

So for the next few weeks I want to focus on supportive strategies to keep me as functional as possible.

First is sleep. I just got a new model C-PAP machine which should help me get the best quality sleep I can. My pain actually increases when I don't sleep well.

Next is exercise. I plan to go to special fibro exercise sessions 3 times per week. They are gentle but very effective in helping me keep moving.

My eating feels out of balance. I don't feel like cooking, sometimes I don't feel like eating and then other times I eat everything that isn't nailed down. I plan to focus on drinking water and eating veggies. I'm also looking for new recipes so I'll be more motivated to cook.

And I want to maintain connection with friends. It's been necessary to stop most of my social activities and I have been so exhausted it has been hard to reply online even. But I know how important it is for me to remain in touch - even on the less than wonderful days. I plan to check-in each day and I hope you'll help me keep the friendship line open. : )

    Dear CJWordplay,
You are indeed a brave woman! I appreciate your pain somewhat as I've had a few "issues" myself, none as awful as your fibromyalgia! I will be supportive in that
a)I will light a candle for you (when I pray) b)hope the flare settles down quick! and
c)hold you in high esteem EVEN FOR TRYING!!

Does swimming help? I had a friend that used to take an exercise class with me and she said it did. I think it all depends on you and you know what's best for your body!

Good luck on this journey! Hope we meet up again!
"Ten mucho cuidado" means "take good care"!

I have a little idea of how it feels to be in pain all the time, have brain fog and feel fatigued. The brain fog and fatigue I know from having hypothyroidism and adrenal fatigue. The pain I know from having broken my back many years ago. I know what you experience is different but I can related to a certain extent. I think your goals are practical and realistic. I'm here for you when / if you need a friend! I know the journey isn't easy and it can seem so long / daunting but I know you can do it! emoticon emoticon

sorry that you're hurting so much! Sounds like you have a great plan in place. I know for a fact that my ability to function (with fibromyalgia) is directly connected to the amount of sleep I get... Pain DOES increase with lack of sleep! Glad you have your new c-pap machine to help!

Dear CJ, I had no idea this is why I hadn't seen you around much recently. I am so sorry that the Fibro flare up is so severe. I really hope you're able to sleep longer and not be so fatiguesd I have severe osteoarthritis and also deal with pain daily. Great idea to take the Fibro Exercise Class. I know it helps my arthritis pain to move more. Sounds like you have a good plan and God willing it will improve the quality of your life. You've been such an inspiration to me my dear friend. I'll be praying for your flare up to end and have more energy again. Take really good care.

Chronic pain is a formidable challenge. Been my primary adversary since my 30's and here I am in my 60's. Do what you need to do for you. In 2011 I went to a chronic pain management center for several months to customize a plan of action for me. This was a repeat as I was at the center in the early 1990's. The biofeedback training and guided imagery sessions were very helpful to relieve symptoms. When I take the time to do these at home (minus all the electrodes measuring muscle tension) I feel better. Need to take my own recommendation more often to "Do what you need to do for you."

    Feel better soon.

You are showing true wisdom by making the choice to do what your body needs at this time. January was a rough month and I totally lost it at the end. I'm working on finding goals to help me re-motivate myself. Reading your words inspired me to continue on.
