Enjoying cooking as a hobby

Saturday, February 02, 2013

I have a new hobby as of 6 months ago. I want to enjoy cooking. I took an inventory of my kitchen. I needed to rearrange cooking tools and pans. I needed to house clean the pantry and especially purge old spices.

I reviewed my recipes and put them in a loose leaf binder and have sheet protectors on each page. I bookmarked several web sites that I use. I then spent time with my dietitian understanding why plant protein would be better for me and my husband. I learned about what foods to buy organic and what can be local. I shopped my nearby grocery store's natural food department. I journeyed to a Wegman's Market to see what was not in my local store and a Kimbarton's food store.

I also got used to ordering things from the web that are not available. As a caregiver, I cannot travel 30 miles one way to get items. Shipping to my home is now an essential.

All I need to do is organize my ingredients, prepare the meal mindfully, and then enjoy.

Good for you. I also just ordered and received some new cooking utensils from Amazon. things I needed and kept putting off.
I only eat Organic foods, and use a lot of homade cleaning items or natural that I order.
You are on your way.

Great job! I need to do some of that purging but I'm pretty sure I could never actually have an organized kitchen at least not for long. You're lucky you have a pantry-I have my kitchen table and a small lazy susan along with a shelf in the garage. Your husband is extremely lucky to have chosen you as his life mate as you are makng his life the best it can be!!

I really appreciate that you are doing a few things really right:
1. Making the most of an obvious strength, your organizational skills
2. Finding the joy in what you are doing

I am so impressed! Great job. emoticon

Like you, I am a caregiver to my wife so now I do all the shopping and cooking. I would really like to hone what culinary skill I have. Practice, practice, practice. My first Thanksgiving dinner for the entire family was a total DISASTER. They were all very courteous but I knew that they were still hungry afterwards.

What a way to get organized and make a plan. Sounds like you are on your way to success in the kitchen.
