I've done some yoga classes with a live instructor, and I've done yoga videos. I definitely prefer a real class with other students and a real instructor present, mainly for safety issues (I don't want to hurt myself doing poses wrong!)...but I do get a kick out of yoga videos sometimes.
First of all, there's the "Power Yoga for Happiness" DVD my sister gave me, where the instructor guy talks about "focusing your Ghandi lasers" when he means to just focus your eyes somewhere. Then there's the video I've been doing recently with some guy who looks like the Yanni (or maybe the Michael Bolton...any dude with thick flowing tresses, anyway) of yoga and wears hilarious denim cutoffs. And yesterday I did a video where the voiceover woman instructed me to imagine that "Jacuzzi jets from heaven" were pushing down between my shoulder blades.
I'm sorry, but all those things are sooooo distracting because they're so silly....I feel like a bad yoga student, but I always giggle at stuff like that. And when my husband is doing the videos with me, I like to snark with him about the videos (lack of quality, weird phrases, cheesy outfits, close-ups of people's crotches) as we do the moves. I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to do that kind of thing when practicing yoga, but....whatever. If you don't want me to make fun of you while I do your video, don't talk about Ghandi lasers and Jacuzzi jets. And don't wear denim cutoffs or zoom in on random dudes' suspiciously bulging packages. :)
Surely I am not the only irreverent practitioner of yoga!
