And they're off!

Friday, February 01, 2013

My family's off the veggie fast that is... didn't last 7 days. The good news? Last night my 19 y.o. stepdaughter asked me if the fried rice at the Chinese restaurant was the same as brown rice. It is brown, after all. She read the book I left for her-- Joy Bauer's Food Cures and was thinking about eating healthier. Instead of sesame chicken with fried rice, she ordered steamed chicken and veggies and I got steamed veggies with dumpling sauce on the side and we split the orders with no rice.

We learned that carbs are not just bread, potatoes and rice-- and we don't need so many servings a day, that veggies can taste good and have more variety than you'd think, that incorporating all the food groups is tastier than relying on one, that sometimes going to extremes can kick you back on track-- but we don't like it for long! I think we are all still going to struggle with our addiction to sweets, but as we get a bit of success, hopefully we will realize that we can't give in quite so often to temptation.

Family weigh in is Monday... I'll keep you posted with the results.

Oh and who has strategies for not eating at night?

We have Netflix too as well as Amazon Prime. I know those commercials are a trigger, but I used to get up and move around during the commercials. I can't sit still for the 45 mins the show is on. LOL. Not sure if it is my ADD or what! I think I am going to try to get my family to go to the gym at some point between 7-9 because that is when we can all go together. We can watch t.v. while not on our butts... Plus... they have cable. I know my stepdaughter wants to watch the new episodes of FaceOff.... LOL

Brush your teeth right after dinner....find something to keep your hands busy, and so you won't want to get them dirty (like knitting or doing a puzzle, or crossword puzzles) find the things that trigger the desire to eat after dinner, and try to cut back or avoid entirely (watching TV is often a trigger, and I wonder if it's the commercials, as we have almost entirely switched to watching streaming videos on Netflix and I rarely get the urge to snack anymore from watching TV, there is not commercial to trigger it!)

Good luck with your weigh in!

I sip hot sf apple cider or herbal tea in the evening to avoid eating at nite. I like the tart ones- they keep my mouth satisfied emoticon

Man, I sure cannot help with the eating at night issue. I have a HUGE problem that way. It is my one time I can lose control easily and binge an entire day's worth of calories...HELP!!!

My strategy to avoid eating at night it's to make sure that I have a good breakfast and lunch that are high in fiber. Hope the family weigh-in goes well for all of you!
