Help!

Friday, February 01, 2013

I hurt my shoulder in the beginning of January so I didn't work out for the whole month other than walking the dog. I was so ready to start body revolution on monday but it started hurting really bad again. I talked to the doctor I work for and he thinks i have small tears in one of the tendons (not the rotator cuff thank god) so he wants me to use these anti inflammatory patches and wear a sling as much as I can.

I need to get back in shape and lose weight but now I can't do any upper body stuff so no body revolution. i almost cried when I talked to him, i'm so mentally ready to kick @ss and my body is holding me back.

I don't know what to do for workouts and weight loss! help!

PS I don't run because of terrible shin splints and I don't have a gym membership. this is why i LOVE dvds!

I can totally sympathize; I had surgery on my tailbone the end of December, so even when I was dying to get working out in January, I had to be very careful. It's frustrating to have the motivation and desire to do it but the body that won't let you.

From my personal experience tho, it was worth it not to push it, to take the time to heal properly. I just saw the doctor this morning for my last post-op visit, and he was thrilled at how well I have healed. I took January very slow; I have a TON of workout DVDs, and I picked some of the lower impact, lower intensity ones to work with. I would have loved to do the tougher ones, but I just didn't want to push it.

Now, I am good to go and am much healthier for having patiently waited until I was physically able to work out like I wanted to.

My suggestion: Do whatever you can do without using your shoulder. Go for walks. Do jumping jacks with feet only, or football shuffles. Do the cardio DVDs you enjoy, but make modifications as needed so as not to aggravate your injury.

Also, be very careful with your diet. I was following Bob Harper's meal plan in The Skinny Rules for January, and like I mentioned did lighter intensity workouts throughout the month, and still lost just over 12 lbs.

You can do it!

Walking IS good, and if you want to do more indoors, try a walking dvd like Leslie Sansone. Also there are lots of other muscles in your body that you can work, so don't despair!! You will get through this! Try dancing? move your feet etc plus the music can lift your mood! emoticon

That's too bad about your injury. I sympathize completely. Walking is terrific exercise, so keep spending time with your dog!!! Wishing you a full and speedy recovery!
