IT’S SWEEPS MONTH!
During sweeps periods—the months of February, May, July, and November—the networks release new series, special episodes, etc., because those are the times when people across the country fill out “ratings diaries,” recording what TV shows they watch, for the Nielsen Company. Getting good ratings during a Sweeps Week means networks can charge more for advertising. In the first Sweeps Week in 1954, the ratings diaries were collected in a “sweep” of the country from east to west—hence the name.

The phrase “I’m not a doctor, but I play one on TV” was first said in a 1986 aspirin commercial.
