This month of this and that

Friday, February 01, 2013

This month i have taken a genealogy challenge to write each day stories telling about an ancestor. I have chosen my mother as i feel she was such a phenomenal woman and really a leader of her times. She did things that aren't considered a big deal today, but were practically unheard of when she did them. To earn money for her second year of college, she travelled alone from OH to New York City to work as a nanny for a dentist's family. in 1939 she and two of her lady roommates from college drove from OH to California - by themselves. There were no interstate highways then, and women alone rarely made such trips. She also played on a women's semi pro basketball team. At year's end when our hometown paper listed memorable events of the year, her death was listed. She had an uncle who was captain of a ship stationed in San Diego, while in California, she stayed with his family and took classes at USC. She and her friends also went to the World's Fair on Treasure island that year. i find all of that amazing. My blog will be on Word Press, but i haven't started it yet. Later this morning i have to get some blood work done for my appointment next week with my chemo oncologist. i also see my ENT Monday. i had an eye exam yesterday and we'll order my glasses today while in town for the blood work. Whew!!

Here's how i did with my January goals:

Health and Fitness:

1. Continue to maintain goal weight - Accomplished
2. Track both food and exercise daily - accomplished nearly every day
3. When I mess up, not to be hard on myself, rather pick myself up and start brand new with my next meal, exercise, etc. - I had to do this twice during the month. it was nice not to get upset with myself.
4. Continue with weekly weigh-ins and immediate corrections if i gain more than 5 pounds. - Done!
5. To try to make the wisest choices I can for myself to remain as healthy as i can be. - it's difficult, more so i believe than getting to goal weight.

Personal:

1. To stay as positive as i can no matter what comes my way. - accomplished
2. Make a real attempt to "downsize" and organize. - i slacked on this one, though i did rid myself of many clothes that were way too big for me.
3. Stay in close contact with my family an friends. - Done!
4. Write! Write! Write! - i did my best, but i believe i can do much better.
5. Try my very best to give more than i get in this journey we call life. - i did succeed at this one.

Great blog - it was so interesting to read about your Mother's adventures and achievements. She sounds like an amazing woman, and I am sure there is a lot of her in you.

Great list of goals - it was so wonderful to see all the accomplished & done goals you achieved last month. And I wish you continued success with this month's goals!

You're Mom sounds like a very adventurous woman! Good for her! If we wait for life opportunities to knock on our door, we'll be waiting forever! But if we make our own opportunities, we'll ALWAYS have an exciting life! That's what my paternal Grandmother always told me. She was an awesome role model.

She raised 3 kids along in a day and age when that was absolutely unheard of! She supported her family (herself, my Dad and his 2 sisters) working 2 jobs. And taking odd jobs as she could. She was a spunky woman!

Your Mom did sound fantastic, and that was a long drive to Calif. I can remember driving to Disneyland from Granada Hills to Anaheim. No freeway in 1955. That seemed like long ride. I can imagine your Mother's trip. Must of been fun for the girls though. Keep up the good work! emoticon
