Deadlifts and I are fighting right now

Thursday, January 31, 2013

Ugh. I am not feeling very great today. I did some UGLY deadlifts yesterday and am feeling it. Deadlifts are one of my favorite things and I normally have really great form but yesterday was weird. My PR is 233# (from 5-6 weeks ago) but yesterday I failed one at 193#. I wasn't sore or anything, I felt fine. It was weird. Then for the WOD my coach kept telling me my back was rounding, and I was trying REALLY hard not to let it, but I don't know what was going on. This hasn't been an issue for me for a really long time. It was pretty frustrating to say the least, especially today since it hurts to bend over.

Anyway, the WOD was

Ring push-ups

50 Double unders after each round.

Since I was having trouble with deadlifting for whatever reason, I decided during the WOD to scale to 15-12-9. I subbed regular push-ups for the ring push-ups. I did them all without going on my knees, which might be the first WOD where that has happened! Another exciting thing- it was my first WOD doing (some) double unders! The scaling was 2:1 for singles, so I did 2 singles + 1 double under x25. Push-ups and double unders are two skills I really want to work on this year and get to the point I do them Rx in workouts all the time. I'm going to try on focus on the progress I made on those yesterday instead of the frustrating deadlift situation.

My gym's nutrition (paleo) challenge starts on Monday. There is a meeting/lecture on Saturday morning. A bunch of my friends are doing it, so I think having that support will be really helpful. We already have plans to get together next week and cook some healthy snacks. A bunch of us are also going out to a fancyish dinner on Sunday night. We didn't plan it that way, but it worked out nicely. I'm not planning on stuffing my face with sugar or carbs, but that place has really good cocktails, so I'm sure there will be a few of those.

Deadlift, she is a strange beast. I will PR, slap 5 more pounds on, PR again, slap on 5 more pounds, PR again. Then, no PRs for awhile. Some regression will occur, but eventually, I'll get back up where I was and PR again. Sometimes months can go by. The thing is, you just have to stick with it. Keep trying things to unstick yourself on the lift. Often times, it's eating more and training less.

I was listening to Jon North talk about how he was stuck at the same weight for over a year on the snatch. I couldn't imagine training 6 days a week for a year and staying stuck on the same kilo for the same lift. Eventually, he broke through. Keep going heavy.
