Another book club night

Thursday, January 31, 2013

Book club night tonight! Which is one of my special occasions that I allow myself to indulge in things I don't usually eat. Happily, tonight we're meeting at my house, so there are several factors that can help me maintain some semblance of control.

First, I get to pick the food, which is a BIG help! I'll make sure there are plenty of veggies and fruit, and I will have several lower-fat versions of some favorites. I bought a kind of chocolate I don't much care for so I won't be tempted, and I'll be making baked instead of fried egg rolls.

Second, at the other ladies houses, we usually gather around a dining room table so all the food is there within reaching distance. At my house, I set us up in the living room and spread the food between a serving table, several side tables and a coffee table. Then I put the items I find the most tempting the farthest away from my chair. This means I'm less likely to mindlessly toss stuff in the ol' pie hole - I have to make a conscious effort to cross the room to get to those dang tortilla chips. Have I mentioned how much I love tortilla chips and how I haven't set foot in a Mexican restaurant in a couple of years because of it?!?

Thirdly, I can be sure to provide non-alcoholic choices. Putting out a pitcher of ice water all ready to go and having the glasses right there will encourage myself and others to pace ourselves on the wine consumption.

Hopefully this will all come together to allow me to enjoy myself, treat myself a bit, but not derail the pretty successful eating week I've had so far. And, as a bonus, I don't have to work tomorrow, so I can get in my morning run even though I'll probably be up waaay too late tonight.

Hope Thursday is treating everybody well!

"Toss stuff in the ol' pie hole" Haha! I know what you mean about tortilla chips... they are good and the ones at Mexican restaurants even seem to taste better for some reason. Too bad they don't bring them out in pre-portioned 100 calorie servings. (Hey, if Nabisco can figure it out, why can't Azteca?) Hope you enjoyed your book club night!
