First gym session

Yep you heard me, after 22 years and one short visit when doing work experience at getting to try the hospital gym, I've never actually been to a gym.
So today was the first time. I was off to a bad start noticing that my padlock would not fit in the lock at the gym meaning I had to carry all my things around.
I went on one of the bikes and did 5km which took about 15 minutes. I got on to the treadmill which for some reason was not turned towards the window but with an overlook of the room. I did 3 km on it but couldn't finish it quickly. I left the gym not particularly feeling like joining the gym ( I've got a week free to try it). I have signed up for two classes this weekend, a spinning class on Saturday and a zumba class on Sunday. I'm mostly looking forward to the zumba class. I did a video on Youtube but I didn't find it particularly fun to do. If I like the classes then I might sign up and get a card for this term.
I'm really unsure though. Running outside is 100x better than on a treadmill. I think I need that environmental effect that you get from being outdoors. To actually see your goal instead of the treadmill telling you. Unfortunately it's too cold outside and often too dark.
One positive thing is that I never felt bothered about the other people. I put my headphones on and ignored what was happening around me.
The other positive thing is that if I go there then I will actually exercise, something that might not always happen otherwise.
Any pros for gym are welcome, they might make up my mind. emoticon

  I agree with you that exercising out doors is much more fun. My son signed up for a gym membership and added me. I find most of it very boring but the weather here is a rather fickle for out door exercise so it is off to the gym. I have don really well from August 2012 and I do not want the weather to be the excuse for not getting my cardio. The owner game me and my son a basic work strength workout so that seemed interesting. I hope you find something that works for you, it gets discouraging sometimes.

    I always find that once I'm already at the gym, I have no excuse not to workout. It's helpful for me that way.

I also like taking group fitness classes or just working out around people. You can find people with similar goals to yours and make a new workout buddy. You could even introduce them to SparkPeople and help them change their lifestyle if they have been dieting/exercising off and on unhealthily.
