The Exercise Tipping Scale - discussed in Ch 3 of The Spark

Wednesday, January 30, 2013

This was a novel concept for me, but gave me hope. I needed to blog about it for quick reference. Should I lose sight of this and wish to find it again.

Concept: In the beginning, a lot of exercise is required to see any results. At some point (different for everyone), the equation will flip and you'll begin to see results with little effort expended.

Hmmmm......so there's something to look forward to. Two years ago, hubby and I followed the P90X program for 2 months. Hubby loved it. I hated it. He lost weight and looked great. I lost inches but NOTHING on the scale and I was ticked. Then we had a family get-together and my brother remarked about how different I looked. I didn't see it, but he sure did. That was an eye opener for me that true progress can be made yet not reflected on the scale.

I've been walking for several weeks now and again, no change on the scale, but I think my tummy is getting trimmer. I need to take my measurements again to see if it's true but part of me is scared to because I'm afraid it won't show any loss. My pants had been getting tight on me again and I'm just waiting for them to loosen up.

At the beginning of the year, I set a goal to walk 20 miles per week...that's over 1,000 miles in a year. I'm excited about it. I haven't achieved this yet, but I'm getting closer each week. Last week was the closest at 18.67 miles for the week. This week, I'm on track to hit 20 and likely, more.

The tipping point on the scale may be a while coming yet, but the endurance and distance scales are tipping already. And for once.....I'M ENJOYING EXERCISE. I never thought I'd ever say that. I think I can walk 35+ miles a week, but for now, I'm leaving the bar at 20, particularly since I have yet to reach it. Once I'm consistent, I'll raise the bar more.

Week 1: 12.1 miles
Week 2: 4.75 miles
Week 3: 18.67 miles

I really like Spark's distance tracker so I can see progress, week over week. The picture form is much more motivational than the numbers listed above. The 4th week is still in progress and I fully expect it to be above that yellow line.
