"Be yourself; everyone else is already taken."
~ Oscar Wilde
Yesterday, I spent a great portion of the day giving performance reviews. Depending on the person, it can be my favorite part of my job! Some of my staff race through life, some stroll. It's my job to know which ones do which well and pair them with the tasks we have that best meet their talents.
As I was wrapping up one man's review, he said to me, "Did you write all of this about me yourself?" I smiled and told him that I had. He shook his head and said, "Cathy, I never knew that you knew that I did all of these things. I don't make a production out of all those little things. You pegged me! You know me! I feel so honored that all that I do was recognized and I was given credit." Now, this is a young man who is truly enjoying who he is!
I walked away thinking that I need to hand out a few more "warm fuzzies" on a more routine basis so that my staff know that I know that they are doing all their little things. I also felt pretty good that I wrote so well about this man! And the next couple of women ... the woman who held her arms in the air like a champion and said, "That's ME!" in the middle of her review. And the young woman who concluded her review with, "It's truly my pleasure to work here. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to shine."
On the days I'm most stressed, I want to look back and remember yesterday. Those feel good moments when a few people reveled in themselves for being simply who they are and no one else. I want to remember THOSE moments for they were GOOD!
