I'm sure you've all seen the banner ads for the BodyMedia Fit armband around the SparkPeople website lately. You know, "as seen on The Biggest Loser".
I bought one last May, but didn't use it a whole lot after the novelty wore off. It was a pain tracking food in Spark and transferring the calorie intake to the BodyMedia website, and it didn't take me long to realize that the BodyMedia armband was counting WAY more calories burned than SparkPeople ever did.
Here's my first blog describing my new toy, for interest's sake: www.sparkpeople.com/mypa
Anyway. Now SparkPeople and BodyMedia have joined forces, and you can transfer activity information from BM to SP and calorie intake from SP to BM with the push of a button. It's super handy... except it makes my calorie burn look HUGE. Today, for example, I did some walking around to/from work and to/from the dentist, then did a 30 minute walk-jog after work. The armband says I've burned 815 calories, whereas Spark would call that about 350 tops. Soooo that's almost 500 calories of food that I could or could not eat today, to come out even.
Fortunate, as I was super hungry this afternoon and ended up having a bunch of mixed nuts that I hadn't planned on to calm the tummy rage, and the guy who sits in the cubicle next to me returned from Hawaii laden with dark-chocolate covered macadamia nuts. Aaaand it's the guy in the cubicle the OTHER side of me's birthday tomorrow, so I'm baking cupcakes. I've only eaten one. So far. And yet thanks to my massive BM-imported calorie burn, Spark says I still have a 412 calorie deficit. DEFICIT!
So. We shall see if the weight falls off me the way one might expect it to with daily deficits like this. I am down 2 pounds so far, which is nice. I'm into the LOWER half of the 160's now. Amen to that.
Science and calorie counting aside, I'm making good progress. I'm packing my lunches and snacks including lots of proteiny snacks, pre-tracking my calories, and getting exercise. Tonight was Week 2 Run 2 of the learn-to-run program, which was a breeze. Max and I did a quick set of strength moves when we got in the door (15 each jumping jacks, push-ups, (assisted) pull-ups, lunges, and squats) to get a little extra boost.
Oh - and I brought home a big wall calendar that nobody from my office wanted and was still laying around (seriously folks, it's almost February, time to toss the unwanted other-company-sponsored calendars!) After seeing...uhh.... oh geez I'm such a bad SparkFriend and so bad with names, even with some of my favourite peeps!!!... RUBY_TUESDAY21's recent blog about her workout calendar, I was dying to make one of my own, and hey - go big or go home, right? Now I have a calendar that runs clear through March 2014, even if the boxes aren't that spacious for workout text. I'll just have to be brief like my good friend.... Ruby. (Argh!!!) There's not many words in each day on her calendar, just some awesome colour coding. (Okay Grace, how crazy-organized-neurotic would you get here? 'Cause I'm SO going there! Just not tonight. No time.)
Right. Making progress. Need to drink more water and sleep more. (That's one other thing the BodyMedia armband does, is it tracks your sleep and measures when you're "actually" sleeping, or so it says. It also recorded a dentist appointment as solid sleep for me once, which tells you how much I believe in its accuracy...)
So off I go, to drink water, go to bed, have a shower, and... frost some cupcakes. Not necessarily in that order.
