5K Training Again

Tuesday, January 29, 2013

It's that time of year. Registration just opened for the Sweetwater 420 5K so time to get training again. Today was a very nice day. 70 degrees out, light sprinkles here and there. Went out on the Silver Comet Trail with the roommie and the dogs and walked 3.64 miles. It was awesome and I feel great. Now need to start trying to run again. I would really like to beat last years time. I can't believe I didn't get back on here and post what it was after the race. I will have to try to find it online. I think it was 42ish minutes. So maybe I will try for a goal of 35 minutes this year and be happy if I just beat last years time.

So for training this year, since I got a new Galaxy S3 for Christmas (thanks Mom!) I got the Zombies, Run! 5K Training App. I had heard good things about the original Zombies, Run! App and was excited to see that they also have a 5k training version. Basically, it's just a story and you are a character in the story and zombies "chase" you, motivating you to RUN. I have done the intro which was just walking and really enjoyed it. I am very interested in what happens next in the story so hopefully this will help keep me motivated and consistent in my training so maybe this year I will be able to run the whole 5K, or at the least beat last years time.

I'm in week 3 right now and I like it. The app has some glitches, like every time I use it I have to let it start the run then once it gets to the first 2 min mark there is no sound and I have to restart it then it works fine. Other than that, it's a neat story and I like the run/walk interval training, and I LOVE that it tells me when to run and when to walk instead of me trying to keep track on my watch which is almost impossible when running. I'm hoping the story will keep it interesting and I will not flake out on training like I have in past years.

How far are you? Do you like it? I found I just needed somewhere to put my brain while running, and this does the job.

    The Zombies program sounds fun!
