Ruby Red sunshine in my mouth

My family goes crazy over summer fruit. We have fruit with dinner every night, and when summer rolls around, I love combining a couple fresh fruits for our dinner treat - blueberries with honeydew, strawberries with peaches, grapes with cantaloupe - making me hungry just thinking about it!
Because of this, we mourn the end of summer fruit season every year. I buy grapes until they just get too squishy, and honeydew past the point of pithiness before I finally concede and move on to the winter stand-bys. Living in Washington, there is no shortage of apples, of course, but other than that, it's pears (and they're getting iffy by this point in the year), bananas and oranges. Apples, pears, bananas and oranges, over and over until summer fruit rolls around again.
Fortunately, there are a few bright rays of fruity sunshine in my gray winter diet. We do love it when the Cuties come out - perfect size and sweetness. Pomegranates are a fun change of pace, but messy! I've tried all the tricks for opening them and can't seem to do it without looking like I've nicked an artery or something. Kiwi is finally in season down in New Zealand's summer and adds a little extra zing to dinner.
But what I really love this time of year is grapefruit! The ruby reds are soooo sweet, it feels like eating candy for breakfast. And only 82 calories for a medium one. Nobody else in my house likes them, so I don't have to worry about reaching for them in the fruit basket and finding them gone. They make hanging on until the strawberries come back around almost bearable!
