Sometimes we hear that affirmations do not seem to make any difference to those using them and I just want to share a couple of techniques that I have used over the years that have been successful and these are to make my affirmations both Positive and Active.
It seems our subconscious readily accepts what we tell it, but does not understand a negative statement so it just removes the "not" from our affirmation.
So "I will not overeat, or "I will not do 'this' again", is translated by our subconscious into "I will overeat" or "I will do this again" thereby defeating the success of the very 'thing' we are trying to change.
Once I learned to re-phrase what I wanted to change into a positive affirmation things began to alter My spirits rose quickly in response to the positive thoughts and instead of giving myself a negative message like "I will not be scared" it became an easy matter to turn the words round into "I will be brave" or "I can be brave".
The principle is to remove the 'not' word from our affirmations and to focus on what we want to achieve rather than re-enforce the very thing we are trying to get rid of.
I know this is really old hat in one sense, (ie saying 'I can' rather than 'I can't' ), but if your affirmations are not proving helpful, consciously changing the wording may make all the difference.
On similar lines another thing which does work for me is to make a statement that is true and that I consciously believe so that my whole system is in harmony with my affirmation.
Rather than saying something like "I am happy and fulfilled" (if it is not yet true) changing the statement to "I am learning how to be happy and fulfilled...... or "I am putting into practice ways of becoming happy and fulfilled ..... can be much more successful along with practicing the actions.
Other words that do not seem to work in reprogramming are "I want to...". They do not have an active component so do not change our thinking or our actions.
Ie. I want to be slim. I want to be healthy etc. have no active ingredient, they are just wishes. I may want to do something with all my heart and cannot understand why it is not happening, but if I am not participating actively in the process of change nothing will happen. Part of a successful affirmation needs to include a positive action on my part.
Wishing or wanting does not make it so. Affirmation and Action do seem to be the magic partnership that bring about change.
