The Flu Strikes

Monday, January 28, 2013

This past weekend was a big birthday weekend for my twins. They just turned 12 last Thursday. Two weekends ago was my daughter's birthday celebration with her friends. Last Saturday was my son's birthday celebration with his friends. Then yesterday was the day the grandparents and aunts and uncles and cousins came over for the family birthday celebration. Or at least that was the plan...

My son's birthday party with his friends went off without a hitch. We went to Main Event for laser tag and video games. Then we came back to our house for a silly string fight in the driveway and more video games. He had a blast. Friends spent the night and they stayed up way too late (which is to be expected). When he woke up Sunday morning he was really whiney and just crankier than normal. He told me his throat hurt but I just chalked it up to too much partying. I made him eat some breakfast and sent him to his room for some more sleep. He came down about an hour later still saying he didn't feel good. My husband felt his head and it was HOT. I took his temperature and he had a fever of 103.5! So we gave him some medicine and put in quarantine in his room. Then we called all his friends that were at the party to warn them that James was running a fever and we also called all the grandparents and aunts and uncles to warn them in case they didn't want to chance being exposed to the bug.

The family party went on as scheduled and almost everybody came anyway. My parents decided to drop the presents by and not stay and one aunt and one cousin did not come, but everyone else came. We had cake and opened presents (at least my daughter did, my son stayed upstairs in his room). After everyone left we took my son's presents up to him and let him open them. I could tell he still wasn't feeling 100% because he didn't mind staying in bed and he didn't have his normal appetite. His fever went away with medicine, but I knew it would come back when the medicine wore off. I called my boss and told him what was going on and asked him if I could stay with my son to take him to the doctor - he told me of course I could.

I took my son to the nurse practitioner this morning. They did a flu test and he has the flu. We got him in in time to start the Tamiflu. He's resting now after some chicken soup for lunch. I am hoping he starts feeling better by tomorrow or Wednesday. Say a little prayer for him, and for the rest of us that we don't get it! :)

I hope you don't get sick. My husband didn't catch the flu when I had it at the holidays. There is hope. Good luck to you and your family.
