Step comparison before Fitbit with after

I have worn a pedometer for 3 years. So I've been tracking my steps a long time and keeping a spreadsheet with the numbers. I got my fitbit on January 3rd and started using it that day.

As you can see some days I was really high and a lot of days way under 10,000 steps

As you can see I went over December's steps by 127,715 and that's in only 27 days instead of 31. Only 3 days under 10,000 steps. It's amazing the difference. It's really made me think about my activity and do more than the pedometer did. I also wore the pedometer for 3 days ith the fitbit and the difference in steps was very small, less than 100 steps. The fibit picks up some small activity that my odometer didn't. Smaller steps or movemnts at times because of something I'm doing that isn't walking at a normal pace. Sometimes my odometer would miss small movements.

I also have to say that having the fitbit webpage account and having friends on fitbit, their average and total for the last 7 days shows up on my page and mine on their's in a list, so we can challenge each other. We can send short encouraging notes to each other. And on the fitbit site is a group virtually hiking the Appalachian Trail that is really challenging me too. And another group I'm in hiking from north to south across Australia. I look up little bits of information about the area I'm hiking through and some of us post these little notes with our daily mileage and make it fun. I find myself wanting to get in more miles. I'm on my second time through the Virtual hike across the US with a team here, but it's not quite the same as what we do on the other teams. It's made it a lot of fun to try to get more steps/mileage in.

It may or may not work for you. We each have to find what challenges and motivates us. For me this is doing an amazing job of upping my exercise. Just wanted to share the amazing numbers with you because it amazed me so much.

    Great job on the steps! I like my fitbit too-but need to catch up to you on the steps! lol.
I a going to check out the virtual hikes, sounds like fun. And hopefully I can do them for real someday soon.

    I found the FitBit motivated me and my steps increased a lot, too - at least until I got sick this past week :-( But I think once I'm back to full recovery healthwise, my steps will increase, too.

    emoticon emoticon I just got a new pedometer that tracks much better and has a timer that stops and starts when I do. I love it. I wear my HRM when I do more strenuous workouts, like my hikes or walks so I can see the true calorie burn according to my heart rate. My new pedometer goes by my age, weight, stride, height, so that is more accurate too, than the last one I had that didn't.
I have seen several have been having problems with Fitbit. I like the the thought of getting the one they are advertising from the Biggest Loser. If they picked that one over any other, kind of says something to me. Hope you continue to have good success with it! I love the team challenges like that! emoticon

    I love my Fitbit - had it about 3 months. It counts the short steps and the few when I move around the house.Also noted that it counts ALL of my steps as activity. I'll get 5K or so at work, walk the dogs 3 miles, and it records 5 miles or more for my cardiac. emoticon

    So, what do I do now...I spent $150 for the body media bands, have been paying the 6.95/mo fees since July 2012 and have never used it. Can't say why. Do I just throw it all in and go with FitBit, or start using my Body Media. I also have a Garmin ForeRunner 610 and so right now I have a lot of money invested in gadgets. Advice please.

    When I count the steps I take and compare it to what my fit it says, the fit bit shows I've walked more steps than I really have. I like what it says but I also do not think mine is accurate.

I don't mean to be a downer but I thought I should share about my fit bit

    I hope this isn't a silly question, but do you wear the fitbit all day?
Tracking every single thing you do to get the total number of steps?
How does that work with the fitness tracker?

So far I've only used the tracker for actual workouts where I know the number of minutes I've spent on each activity.

I thought that regular daily activity (walking to my car, shopping, going up and down stairs) is already built into the calorie ranges I was given. Not true?

Perhaps it's time for more thought into how I'm entering numbers.

I tried to find the Appalachian group but wasn't able to locate it. I also can't figure out how to find friends.

Duh!

But I love my fitbit and am increasing my activity also. I love the stairs feature and my sleep has improved now that I see how bad it was I am making myself stay in bed and get the sleep I need!
