10K?!? oh dear

Monday, January 28, 2013

I registered to run a 10K! It's not until I have some time to build up my endurance! As it is now I can barely run 5K. But I'll do it, even if I have to take walking breaks. The race goes down the infamous "Yonge Street" in Toronto, and is mostly on a slight downnhill grade for a lot of at worst I can roll down, ha ha.

don't worry about walking - when i run, i do what is called run/walk - in my case, 30 second intervals of walking and 30 seconds running. the result was a faster 10K time than when i "just" ran and a faster half marathon time, too - it works! emoticon

Training is everything! I will repeatedly remind others of that.

After all my races, 5Ks & Halfs, I'm doing my first 10K this coming Saturday. If you have gone through this 5K Program and HAVEN'T embraced interval running, I highly recommend it.
Example: on my 5Ks, I would do a 12 min pace for 3 minutes then walk a good pace for 1 min. I started doing this after a totally disorganized 5K Plan. I found that 1 min of recovery is huge in the long run. This last Half, I did a 4:1 ratio. I looked at my 10K split and saw a decent time to work for this Saturday. BUT, I'm now going to try a 3:1 interval pace just to see what I clock.
If you want to check out my "mentor," it's Jeff Galloway Training, he preaches the gospel of interval training.

All the best and thanks again...
