Trying to be Vegetarian, turned 40 and balancing...

Sunday, January 27, 2013

Well, after Thanksgiving I felt bloated and yucky. I didn't really eat much meat, I usually didn't anyway, but this time I just felt different. I decided to make a change. My younger sister had told me she had become Vegetarian and my good friend and exercise buddy had become Vegan, so I figured I would try it, at least, for a bit to cleanse. Well, it stuck for the most part until I got a migraine. They are my downfall. I ate some Mexican, beef nachos. One night, then back to vegetarian food. All good, then we went back to my in-laws for Christmas.....I tried to plan, but it was very difficult. They aren't very healthy eaters. I tried hard, but granola bars, cereal, apples with peanut butter, almonds and popcorn can only go so far. I had a few thin slices of ham and one small bowl of chili. No biggie, home we came and back to vegetarian eating.

My problem.....I had been sick and not exercising for over a month. Next problem, I was turning 40 on the 21st and getting lots (about 15) coupons to many restaurants. Now, I did great and ate vegetarian at all of them, but some weren't the healthiest. I brought home leftovers and towards the end I think I just got tired of eating out and began to slack on the healthy part. Still vegetarian food, but not so healthy. Veggie chili nachos with guac and sour cream and a brownie!!! Seriously?!?

My daughter, 8 has been wanting to plan a party for me, but it just wasn't going to work out so we ended up having me do a GNO with some lady friends. Dinner out (I had a veggie burger and sweet tater fries) and then we stayed in a hotel. Problem, I celebrated with bringing 2 batches of brownies. One with chocolate chips and one with chocolate chips, heath bits and walnuts. Not many were eaten so they were in my kitchen yesterday. I have a horrible weakness for brownies, so I have been trying to get rid of them so I can start over.

My coupons are gone mostly (Culver's custard....uhoh) is the last one and the brownies are almost gone. I am subbing at my kids' school tomorrow and have packed a healthy lunch. I know what to do and know I can do it, it's just scary that it has been sneaking up on me.

I have 2 months of unlimited hot yoga to do and plenty of great food to eat. I just need to get cracking.

Wish me luck and good health.

Thank-you. My husband is now eating a lot less meat and we as a family are just eating healthier. I am trying new things and even made my own veggie stock the other day! Not too bad...not sure how to calculate the nutrition for it, but it was good to make and then I made a soup later and will make some beans, lentils, quinoa and other stuff, too. I like that my family is in on it, mostly.

I too, have tried some salmon twice. I am ok with it once in a while, but prefer just my veggies and fruits. :)

Going vegetarian at first is really challenging! My brother and I decided to try it more than 8 years ago now, right after Thanksgiving too, actually! Some friends of ours had been vegetarian for about a year and we thought, "If they can do it, man, so can we!" So we decided to give it six months. Neither one of us has looked back!

I have to admit, though, that I eventually becoming what some people call "pescetarian" meaning that I do eat seafood occasionally. That really opens up the options at restaurants and allows my husband (who isn't really a vegetarian) some leeway with home-cooking. Good luck!

And Happy Birthday!!

Thanks! Oh, yes! I LOVE hot yoga! I haven't done it since a challenge that I completed at the end of November, but I think it is amazing. I am excited to get back into it.

Happy birthday and congratulations on the vegetarianism! I hope it continues to work out well for you. I also hope 40 brings you fewer migraines. Yuck!

Have you done hot yoga before? Enjoy it!
