For the last 5 months I have tried to make changes to eat healthier. It's not so superficial as perhaps when I was younger.....to look better is still a goal but not as high on the priority list. My goal is to be healthier. I have gotten by with a few things that ailments that were easily treated and perhaps only health scares. When your 100 lbs overweight the possibility of it being real at anytime is standing right outside my door.
I'm trying to eat cleaner. It's somewhat different then decreasing calories or just balancing my diet. I didn't loose any weight recently which is totally my fault. Consistency because I'm always in a rush all day long, poor planning, and food greed are still my obstacles.
As I consider the matter I have made some strides with eating cleaner.
I do not add artificial sweeteners. Unfortunately it's hard to completely avoid. But I'm trying.
I do not drink diet soda anymore. Drank 1-2 / day prior.
I do not eat processed lunch meats.
Very little of my food comes out of a box.
I consume limited sweets.
I have increased my fiber quite a bit.
I strive for 8 waters per day. I like water but do get a little bored. Mineral water or adding lemon helps. I still miss soda but I'm coping.
Sometimes I drink 100 % juice. Yes, I know it's allot of calories but it's better then soda and it helps me get my freggies in.
I drink green or white tea.
Regular soda is not so good of a replacement but I have one on special occasions. Still is allot of chemicals and needs completely eliminated.
I have been reading and studying Life's Daily Challenge ; Balancing Diet and Exercise and Natural Health Using Herbs, Supplements, and Vitamins team information and links. These ladies are a wealth information. My knowledge about any of this is evolving. I have allot to learn. I was raised in the Midwest. Meat (beef or pork) is the largest portion of the plate with a little veggie on the side. Fruit perhaps as a snack. Summer gardens do increase veggie consumption considerably. Eating out was a treat or twice a year. As my children grew I tried to balance their diet but chicken nuggets, hot dogs, and frozen pizza made it to the table more then it should have. As the children grew up we ate out maybe once a month. We always have a garden and I canned. The children are gone now. I probably gained 40 lbs over the last 5 or so years. Basically because I didn't need to set a daily good example and we have the capability of eating out frequently. You know when you have ate out too often; when it takes a person forever to think about what sounds good.
Where is the rambling leading to? What's next?
Still following my basic plan of 8 H 20's or more per day, limit as far as possible artificial sweeteners and flavors, no soda pop. Minimum of 5 freggies per day. Increase exercise and aim for 15 minutes or more per day. Avoid processed food. Utilize healthy recipes. Strive to get my vitamins and minerals from well balanced food choices.
Add foods like blueberries, and other berries, kale, spinach, walnuts, coconut or almond milk.
As always I'm always in awe how much better I feel when I eat healthy foods. Planning will not only provide me better health, save dollars, but likely save me the valuable commodity called time.
