This morning Pastor preached a very familiar text. Although I've heard it preached several times before and have even taught it myself, today he unlocked a powerful point that spoke directly to me.
The sermon title, was "Peter's Big Mistake" and the message text was Matthew 14:22-32 CEV. This is the story about Jesus' disciples out on a boat during a terrible storm and Peter's request for Jesus to call him to come to him, which would allow Peter to walk on water. Well, the part that got to me was verse 32, "When Jesus and Peter got into the boat, the wind died down."
Jesus gave the disciples the instruction to "get into a boat and start back across the lake." (vs. 22) Jesus being Omniscient knew that a storm was coming, but what's more important than a storm is the One who controls the storm. Although the disciples were terrified (vs. 26), Jesus said to them, "Don't worry! I am Jesus. Don't be afraid." (vs. 27) NOTE: He said don't be afraid, not get out of the boat! So when Peter got out of the boat and started walking on the water toward Jesus, he shifted his focus from the 'One Who Controls the Storm' to the storm. He began to sink then shouted "Save me, Lord!"(vs. 30)
For years whenever I've read this scripture, I focused attention on Peter's lack of faith, but today Rev. "flipped the script." Peter's primary issue was disobedience. What was Jesus' instructions? GET INTO A BOAT AND START BACK ACROSS THE LAKE!!! And when Peter began to sink, Jesus didn't walk him to the shore...where did they go? Jesus turned Peter around and they got into the boat with the other disciples! WOW!
As much as I would love to point a finger at Peter and say, "Really Dude?!" I cannot, because I too got out of the boat, walked on water for a little while then started sinking. I know full well what God has called me to do and I should've been "across the lake " A LONG TIME AGO, but for the past three months I've allowed "the events of life" to shift my focus. I know that the same Jesus who helped Peter can AND will help me...I just need to TRUST more and TRIP less!
With that being said, I AM BACK IN THE SPARK BOAT because I also need the support and encouragement of my SPARK Family and of course I'm ON TO THE NEXT ONE!
