XC Skiing: Never Better!!

Sunday, January 27, 2013

Loving the skiing . . . a solid hour yesterday, again today. Perfect snow and wax conditions for that marvellous flying sensation. Yesterday was sparkling, today was soft grey. Chickadees both days!

I'd worked my way back up to 30 minutes on the cross trainer again at the gym last week: Monday, Wednesday and Friday (plus strength training all three days, of course). Already the intensely crowded New Year's Resolution conditions are returning to normal. Sad to see how quickly people lose their determination . . . but it's no fun waiting while people sit on the machines and drink their high-calorie sports bevvies either! Waaaay more calories in than out going on there . . . . it doesn't happen by osmosis, guys. (Nope, don't say any of that, don't even permit such a thought to cross my face: really, I do not. And I get that the whole gym etiquette thing takes time to absorb. But: lots of people don't stick around long enough to absorb it either.)

It feels so good to feel well again, and completely recovered from that very debilitating flu.

And, much as I love the gym, love being outside to exercise even more. We'd had more than a week of -15 to -20C weather: now -5 to -7C feels positively balmy. XC skiing is the closest I'm going to get to running, given my hips and knees . . . and it's amazing to me how much I love winter now that I've resumed skiing.

Used to love our Sanibel Island winter holidays, but now I have no longing at all to go south. Spring, summer and fall are all gorgeous right here and will come in good time. For now, I'm enjoying winter! The days are lengthening by about 90 seconds a day: it's noticeable. And soon it will be light enough to sneak out for a little ski after work, maybe, if I don't have any late appointments . . . . .

There is nothing like that cold, crisp, clean, fresh winter air. It's healing properties seem to be intensified by the lower sun shining upon our face and into our eyes.
Ah... what a treasure. Enjoy!

My gym is the same..It is getting less crowded by the end of January. Great job of staying on track and exercising. Your skiing sounds fun.

Hoping conditions here will get me out skiing soon too. I agree about how quickly people give up. Been there myself too many times. Great blog.

I never liked the cold, but your descriptions are almost enough to make me like winter.

How refreshing to hear from someone who enjoys the winter time!
I haven't skied in many years but do remember that natural high of being in the snowy woods on a trail and breathing that marvelous fresh air and moving my strong limbs and staying warm at the same time!

I'm glad you are enjoying your northern weather! Yes, Lots to Enjoy everywhere. When I was in FL last week, I mentioned to a neighbor how awful the traffic was, and she said, "YES, the Snowbirds are here!" Oops, even from Arkansas that includes me!

Well, bless your heart for loving the north. I was born and bred in Michigan and now am steeling myself for a week back. On the list of things to buy this week: snowboots. Heavy winter coat is at the dry cleaners. *sigh*

Super fabulous you are! Doing what you can to keep up your fitness, and more importantly, actually enjoying it and making the best out of your seasons! Here is to that wonderful swooshing sound across pristine, sparkling snow shining like diamonds while the birds serenade you from the trees! Yes, pure bliss I would say!!
Glad you are fully recovered from that nasty sickness -its hung on so long for a lot of people :(
Enjoy what is left of your weekend, and hope you have time after to work to enjoy some more skiing!

Your descriptions of winter could almost make me like snow and cold weather (though I do agree that x-country skiing is the best!)!
