Dave Martin, Ph.D. - Information Technology

Sunday, January 27, 2013

I never thought I would see this day.

It has been 5 years, 8 months, and 25 days of hard work, obstacles, frustration, and yes even enjoyment and satisfaction knowing I was able to perserve and 'get it done'.

On January 17, 2012, I successfully defended my dissertation, and 'earned' the title - Dave Martin, Ph.D. I have submitted my final dissertation last Tuesday, and now am just waiting the formality of the sign-off of the Dean of the University for them to confer my degree - I was hoping for the end of the month, but it looks like the degree audit will not be done until next month.

So in celebration of my accomplishment, yesterday I did - ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!!!! It was great not having to worry about working on the dissertation for a change (that has occupied my evenings and weekends for the past 4 months). It is kind of surreal though - not having to worry about degree work (for the first time in a looong time). I'm happy I finished, but more relived than anything else.

But now that I'm done, it's back to some serious Sparking!! I did 45 minutes on the indoor trainer this evening, and starting tomorrow, it's back to tracking EVERYTHING! I've put on some serious pounds over the last 4 months through a combination of not eating right and lack of exercise - but not that I'm done with the dissertation and entire Ph.D. program, it's time to get Sparked like a lazer!!!

Oh, BTW, as I figured the Doc jokes have already started to pour in - but I don't mind, it keeps me humble (my wife calls me Dr. Husband - but still makes me do the dishes and take out the trash, and yes, I have heard alll the Doc Marten jokes [but hey, I do have shoes named after me, I just got to tell them to 'fix the e'], and on, and on).

Onward!

Congratulations, Doctor Martin. You have had such a long haul and you definitely deserve the opportunity to do nothing, or to go for a ride or do whatever you so desire. Enjoy the freedom.
