Another great hike in the snow!

Saturday, January 26, 2013

Some of you might think I am a bit crazy, but I wanted snow for my hike again today. In the Paris area, it is melting, so it is nothing like it was a few days ago. That wasn’t going to stop me! When I heard there was still a lot of snow in the Somme area (1 hour and 15 minutes North from where I live), I knew this was where I would go today! And I wasn’t disappointed, there was indeed lots of snow left...

I parked in a little hamlet called Le Paraclet, near Cottenchy, outside the agricultural high school. Its main building happens to be a castle, nothing less! :) I couldn’t find any information about it though.

The chapel (St Ulphe) of the castle is still there...

There were lots of water during today’s hike. Which was lovely, but I never realised before that it feels much colder near water. Or was it just my impression? The first part of the hike was through lots of little ponds, mostly covered with ice.

I liked the lines of the railway in the snow...

Then I walked through the fields, and that was by far the most challenging (and exciting!) time of my hike.

There was so much snow (well, by Parisian standards, I am sure many of you are used to seeing much more!)... All my body is aching tonight, it was such a great workout! :)

I really enjoyed the view across the fields too (when often in the summer I get bored if I have to cross fields, they seem endless!)...

In Boves, I started following the Avre river. The beginning was very scary as it was icy and incredibly slippery because the path was narrow and leaning towards the river. I didn’t want to end in it!

But it didn’t last. Soon the path became wider and easier.

Also, the sun was shining gently on the left, which made it even nicer!

Some swans were looking for food...

In the snow I could see there had been other birds around too!

After crossing more fields, I passed by Boves’ medieval castle (built around the 10th century). There is only two walls of a tower left, and they look like they could collapse anytime! I wouldn’t want to go closer to them.

As I turned back on the path, I could see a different view of Boves’ castle, looking like it was disappearing in the snow...

The last part of my hike, as the sun was slowly setting, was quite magical!

But as you can see, it was about time I reached my car, the sun had almost disappeared! I always bring a lamp with me though, just in case I get lost or something gets wrong. :)

It was another fantastic hike! I was so happy I had found all that snow... More rain and warmer temperatures are expected in Paris tomorrow, so there will definitely be no snow left here at all!

Thank you for reading! I hope you are all having a beautiful weekend!

So beautiful, I like to watch your snowy pictures more than I like to go out and experience it myself! I am a bit of emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon a freezy cat so I really don't enjoy being outside. Now perhaps I would if it weren't almost 0 deg out but I so enjoy your hikes from the warmth of my computer room!!!
The swan was magical as was the sun setting thru the woods and over the field. Absolutely wonderful once again.
