An 'aha' moment at 74!

Saturday, January 26, 2013

When I was a little girl, during WW2....my mom would feed me porridge almost every day. OH, how I hated it. It was gluey, yucky and heavy. I would smother it with brown sugar just so I could get it down. And sometimes gagged even then.
As a teen I would not eat it...and very, very rarely have I eaten porridge since then.

That is until I restarted SparkPeople again in earnest on Jan 1 of this year.

I tried steel cut oats. emoticon
I tried a few ideas I found on Sparkpeople. emoticon
I adapted a little to fit into my life. emoticon

And as I sat eating my 'Porridge' this morning, my dear Mom came to mind, I teared up and I thought 'thank you Mom'. I am really enjoying this bowl of nutritious goodness. emoticon

So maybe the moral to this story, is to try and use some of the good advice your Mom (or Dad) told you when you were very young. It just might apply in your life today.

I love porridge but my husband doesn't, so I put hes into a smoothie so that he still gets the benefits of good wholesome oats.

Hi. I have never been a fan of mushy cereal either. every once in a while, i try oatmeal because it is "good for you." well since joining sp, I have tried it again, but instead of using water, I use vanilla flavored silk (soy milk) and I add either home made apple sauce, half a banana, or some craisins. Now I really love it and have it
4-5 times a week!

That's a nice memory Lyn. I don't even remember what my Mom used to give me for breakfast . . . I'm older than you and my memory won't go back that far!

I love oatmeal now and have it often but I still love my brown sugar on it! Have also gotten into toast with creamy honey on it, just a swipe of honey, enough to give me a taste!
Love to see your cheery blogs girl! Keep up the great work!
