JANUARY 26 DEVOTION

Saturday, January 26, 2013

SO THEN, PUTTING AWAY FALSEHOOD, LET ALL OF US SPEAK THE TRUTH TO OUR NEIGHBORS, FOR WE ARE MEMBERS OF ONE ANOTHER. EPHESIANS 4:25

LORD, WHEN THOSE DEAREST TO MY HEART ARE MOVING IN ILL-ADVISED DIRECTIONS, I FEEL COMPELLED TO SPEAK UP AND CRY OUT "DANGER!" BUT AT THE SAME TIME, I'M AFRAID MY LOVING INTENTIONS WILL BE MISTAKEN FOR MEDDLING, FOR OPINIONATED ATTEMPTS AT CONTROL. I CANNOT BEAR TO KEEP SILENT, YET I CANNOT BEAR THE THOUGHT OF BEING SHUT OUT AND REJECTED BY SOMEONE ABOUT WHOM I CARE SO DEEPLY. BUT WHEN I WEIGH THOSE TWO THINGS, I KNOW THAT NOT TO SPEAK WOULD BE UNLOVING. SO HELP ME TO OFFER WORDS OF GRACE AND TRUTH IN A SPIRIT OF GENTLENESS THAT REVEAL MY LOVE AND YOURS AS WELL. AMEN.

I LOVE YOU AND, BECAUSE I LOVE YOU, I WOULD SOONER HAVE YOU HATE ME FOR TELLING YOU THE TRUTH THAN ADORE ME FOR TELLING YOU LIES.

Being slow to speak is valuable too.

I have learned to ask permission first. If they say yes then they seem more open to listen to your wisdom. If they say no I have learned to keep my mouth shut.

Colossians 4:6 Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.

I've found that there are several things that play into whether I can offer words of correction or encouragement to someone else. The timing is important, what I say is important and how I say it is important. A person will not receive advice or correction from me unless they know that I love them and am not judging them for what I am speaking to them about.

Great words of wisdom. One of the things that I practice on this topic is timing. We all are only so open to "hear" things depending on what is happening in our lives. I try to time the delivery of the message to when the person may be open to hearing the message.

    Thanks for sharing.

Such a fine line we can travel. Let us discern, from above, the difference. emoticon
