Learned a sad lesson today

Friday, January 25, 2013

Salads are not always the greatest choice at a restaurant. Shudder. I had had such a good day, too! I had had an appointment this morning with my doctor to go over my latest blood tests. We set this appt up in December after my annual exam when she told me that my sugar levels were over 100 for the very first time...making me 'pre-diabetic' and my cholesterol was high.... So..after the holidays I set my 2013 goals towards a healthy lifestyle...by tracking...everything. Today my levels were WONDERFUL! My cholesterol was "great!" she said, and my sugar level was under 100 and the other indicator of diabetes, the A1c was only 5.5 which meant I was not even pre diabetic....normal! I had had a chance to tell my doctor ALL about SparkPeople, and even showed her the website! She was VERY interested, and we got to talk for about 15 minutes on all the things I wanted to do this year for my health. She insisted that what I do be SUSTAINABLE. So that is added to my goal. We agreed to meet in 90 days so she could check my levels and even see if I was able to up my vitamin D. Needless to say, I felt amazing as I walked out of the doctor's office!
NOW comes the learning part. My hubby took me out to dinner after a WW meeting tonight. He weighed in...I didn't. I go to the Saturday one, so I just went to the meeting with him. When we went to dinner, I thought I would stay 'good' to my goals and have a cobb salad with soup. Imagine my dismay and amazement when I got home and checked out that restaurants menu online to find that the Cobb Salad was 800 CALORIES!!!! Not only that...it is HIGH in SODIUM!! I wanted to cry. My tracker for the day ended up almost 2000 calories!
I am NOT going to let me get this down. I decided to have ANOTHER glass of water before I started working on my SparkPoints for the evening, and made a plan for a double workout session tomorrow. I will be more careful tomorrow about what I eat. I will use this as an educational moment. I looked over the menu that Shari's had....and chose some lower calorie options for 'next time'...since Shari's is a restaurant we go to at least once a month. I am happy they have a nutrition page on their website.
Thinks that make me go hmmmmmm.......... emoticon

You not only learned a valuable lesson, but made it even better by sharing it with others, so we might avoid the same thing happening to us... Thank you so much for the "heads up". Hen

I try to always check the menus online first if I can. If not...I tend to try to stick to a side salad.

Same thing has happened to me. I know ask for a nutritional fact sheet when dining out.

Yes, the salad thing is a tricky situation. That's why I avoid big ones and going to places like the Souplantation.

I like the fact that the restaurant lists this on their menu, amazing.

What a great result at the doctors, see, you are doing great. Some doctors are hard to impress.

Maybe chalk it up to one cheat meal a week and just back off the next day a bit.

This journey we are all on is ups and downs.
