I say... Forget BMI

I was reading Holly's last to blogs. She said she had to loose another 20 to be out of the obese category. she has already lost 140 pounds and probably doesn't have much more than 20 left to loose. The rest of her weight is bone and muscle.

I say FORGET ABOUT B M I - it only takes in consideration weight and height - and if you are on the petite side ( or the short end of the stick) of height it seems even more out to get you. Muscle weighs so much more than fat it is not a good indicator of health at all. BMI - is an easy and inexpensive way to tell how fat a FAT person has. My words. That is all. I checked on it is Wikipedia and when it was devised between 1830 and 1850 it was meant to be used as a simple means of classifying sedentary (physically inactive) individuals, or rather, populations, with an average body composition.

In so many ways we have advanced but we have gotten away from a almost 200 old way of classifying people. It does a good job at classifying people who are very inactive but not the people who are active.
It does not measure any of the really important stuff that tells the real story of where a person is health wise. cholesterol is one way- but still not the end all to give us the answer.
Blood pressure is another- but still- not the way to get a whole picture. blood work another way-, % of fat still another way. Maybe the new quick way to get an idea of how healthy a person is would be to figure out the percentage of fat a person has on their body.
The only sure way to tell is to do all the tests- and get the big picture. Every test would have to be done- and insurance companies don't do all- and out screens. they do just the main ones that catch the most common problems. still- that is all physical doesn't even consider the mental and emotional part of a persons health.

an example of this would be if your BMI was 34 then your prime would be 34/25= 1.36 which states that you would be 36% over your optimal number.

We all know someone who has lots of muscle and has a BMI that is really big. There would be no way we would consider them unhealthy. The other way- we all know someone who is supper skinny. They are not fat- but they might not be healthy either.

We all know you can't judge a book by it's cover (or it's title either) and the same goes for each individual person. Yes- I know there are exceptions to this rule... but for the most part it is true. Now... to many people all that matters is what is on the outside. WE KNOW DIFFERENTLY. Now we just have to teach the people who only wee the cover that too.

  I agree with this. I am trying to stay away from the numbers game and just stick to healthy eating.

    Absolutely!!

It may be a good indicator for someone who's just starting out losing weight, but I think it gets more inaccurate as you go.

Sometimes gyms will measure body fat percentage with calipers. It's not as accurate as the submersion method, but it's still a better indication.
