gun control?

Thursday, January 24, 2013

when we (my siblings and i) were young, and we had some differences with each other, we'd turn to our parents to settle the matter.

they were never able to deal with our issues and soon ended up in WWIII with each other. so nothing ever got resolved, years and years of bickering over the same ol' same ol'.

now this may seem a bit of a jump, but when i hear about all these school shootings, one characteristic jumps out at me every time. some poor lonesome boy who suffered a lot of bullying and criticism got his hands on a gun and went berserk. what's his message? he feels so small and innocent, and at one point his limits are breached. so he's going to take himself down... and others like him (in his eyes). now that's revenge on this mean old planet.

and what do we do about it? get all in a tizzy over the same ol' same ol', which we somehow can't seem to resolve, but basically has nothing to do with the real issues. just like my parents-- and probably millions of others.

can't we stop bullying? and putting so much pressure on our kids to 'be perfect'? never going to happen, because there is no such thing as 'perfect'. plus: when are we going to open our eyes to what's going on around us, and our hearts to each other? our society has really gone awry.

as for gun control, i have never heard such ### argumentation in favor of our 'second amendment rights' and our 'freedom'. read the wording carefully, and try to imagine the spirit they were written in! 1776 is never coming back.

want to feel safe when sending your kids to school? one possibility would be to leave the country!

I wish we could leave the country! But if we permitted the gun technology of 1776 people would be armed with muskets and blunderbusses. No automatic weapons. No machine guns. No multi-shot revolvers.

For those who adore the second amendment, to be true and consistent, you must also admit that you favor a mentality that permits slavery and does not allow women to vote. You admit that a person can be elected president ten or twelve or for an unlimited number of terms.

I hope that the Constitution will be amended; it has been done before! Why not again?

Amen, Sparkchantal! The nation's founders could not have imagined that their concern for allowing for a well-armed militia to protect the state would end up being defined by a faction as permitting an individual to have weapons that outgun those responsible for keeping the peace, kill dozens in less than a minute, and turned against innocent children. Responsible gun owners should want responsible laws, not a free-for-all.

The gun control problem in this county has many, many facets...mental health, bullying as you mentioned, ammunition clips that can shoot 40 rounds in less than a minute, a violent gun culture where kids shoot em up every day on video games, graphic movies and TV and many, many other things not written here.

I don't know how to fix it all, but I love this country and I won't leave. I have the philosophy that violence can happen anywhere and if it's time for my ticket to get punched and I'm in the wrong place at the wrong time, then so be it.

Couldn't agree more. The core of it is, as you say, can't we all just get along!!!
