Weight Lifting: new opportunity

Remember how I said I would open myself to trying new things as the opportunities arise?...

Weights. Yup. Weights.

I love a method that gets me strong, lean, curvy, toned, all in a short amount of time.

By that, I do not mean lose weight fast. I mean an efficient workout. You know, one that lasts maybe 30 min-in and out. Yet, produces amazing results.

I hear weight lifting, done right, can be that workout.

I am aligning some amazing looking women to help me with this endeavor. I can't believe I am looking forward to learning to lift weights!

But please allow me to clarify-I do not want to body build. No crazy puffed-out muscles for me. Just a strong lean body.

It seriously fills me with giddy joy to imagine myself lifting! I never thought I would feel this way. Hmmm, but I am also the cautious type. I do not want to get hurt. I've seen some good books out there. Gotta get one. Read. Educate myself.

So, do you lift? How did you get started?

    I don't know why strength training has always scared me. But since I turned 60 in June, I have been persistently walking and on the service road I take to get to the walking route, I now bring water bottles with me and do arm exercises....bicep curls, T's, Around the World, tricep kickbacks and arm lifts... I started with 500 ml water bottles because I have had bursitis and I didn't want to start anything like that gain, so I am now up to 1.5 litre or 2.5 lb. bottles, and I do have baby biceps..... every little bit helps, if you keep on doing it!!!

    Just came to the same conclusion myself a few weeks ago. I got "The New Rules of Lifting for Women" - and also picked up an e-book by Nia Shanks "Beautiful Badass". Reading her blogs and her website, I just love her. I started on her beginners program, just completed the 3rd week of it - and feeling the difference already.
Loving the fact that putting in 45 mins or so 3 times a week is enough when you train the right exercises. And loving the confidence that comes - like starting week 1 - from lifting.

    I hear ya! I never lifted weights until joining CrossFit. It's produced some amazing results! And I love it! Good luck and have fun!

    Willingness if the first essential step and it sounds like you've got it!

Spend some time studying, get a good book like "The New Rules of Lifting for Women" by Lou Schuler. Focus on getting the form right before you worry about how much weight you can lift.

I've been lifting weights 3x/week for about 3 years and it has done wonders....I look better at 53 than I did at 33!

Do exercises for big muscles (legs, butt, chest) before doing smaller muscles (biceps).

If your "amazing women" friends are well trained, then that's great. I started out by hiring a personal trainer and told him, "you're job is to teach me how to do these right and to not get hurt doing them"
