I went to a new psychiatrist last week for the first time. I was excited because he said he would help me get off some medicines that I knew I needed to get off. He gave me a prescription for an anti-depressant. I took it once. It made me so tired the whole next day that I called and told the office. They told me to give it a week and then come back if I still had problems. The side effects were so bad that I called and made an appointment for yesterday.

When I went in the office, the first thing he said was "Have I seen you?" After finding my chart, he asked me why I was there. I told him. So he writes out a prescription that he first tells me is for sleep, then he tells me it's for depression. When I asked him to clarify it for me, he told me that there were other doctors that I could go to.

I was taken aback and definitely didn't feel right about what he said. I had another doctor appointment after that. My blood pressure reading was higher than it's ever been.

Am I wrong in questioning why he would be giving me something that will make me groggy when I had complained about the other medicine making me groggy? Am I being thin-skinned or was he a little rough with what he said?

I've only had 1 experience with a pyschiatrist and it was almost this bad... How disappointing! In my case, he gave me pills and told me to take them for 10 days and come back. I had such horrible headaches, I thought my head was going to fall off. When I went to his office, he had left, without bothering to call and let me know, and his receptionist told me to stop taking them. I did see him a couple times after that and he never again asked me about them...????????????? and they're the ones with the M.D.????????????????
Have you heard, Physician heal theyself???? Maybe that should really be "Patient", patiently heal thyself and forget about the so-called experts...

No you weren't wrong in questioning what he had prescribed you and getting the clarification that you needed at all, what a jerk he is. i would look for another Doctor. I have been on anitdepresants that made me so sleepy and groggy, I was told to give it a couple of weeks. I was on one that was so bad that I was sleeping all the time.

It would be nice if we could find doctors as caring and conserned as the ones on TV. Try a new doctor until you are happy with one.
