When we left the sunny USVI, we had no idea that the summer sun in New Zealand is actually more intense - apparently the hole in the ozone layer is closer to this part of the world, plus the air is much clearer so the sun's rays aren't filtered as much as in the Northern Hemisphere.
And trust me, on the occasional sunny days, my head and scalp definitely feel the difference in intensity. I also tend to get permanent brown areas on my high cheekbones, so I need some protection - my powder sunscreen doesn't always keep all the sun off. Just one more incentive - we head to Australia next week, and it will be even sunnier there. Not to mention when we head to the islands in the Pacific - lots of sun!!!
So I bought a new sun hat - it's cloth, so it folds up easily in my luggage, plus it will keep off rain as well as sun.
And it is gorgeous!!! I fell in love with it, and just had to buy this. Because, after all, it will keep my head happy and healthy, right? NOT because I look like a fashionista international spy or sophisticated world traveller or anything, LOL!
