I think I've mentioned before that where I'm living now is 100 miles from the nearest tiny supermarket. Today I went there, my first grocery shopping since I went to Odessa on Nov. 7! Produce is painfully expensive there, so I just got a little fresh fruit and some frozen veggies, plus milk (some to use fresh, some to make yogurt, some to freeze), flour, cereal, oatmeal, eggs, dried beans and lentils, and COFFEE. I think the coffee was the most urgent need-- I ran out on Friday and had to drink INSTANT for 3 days.
Actually, I don't hate the taste of instant; I'll drink it with lots of milk as a sort of faux cappuccino and kind of enjoy it as a snack-- but it's not coffee. I need real coffee in the morning! And I scored and found some on sale, 2 pounds for under $5. Not the really good stuff, but it'll do.
So... November 7 to January 22 is what...? Nine weeks plus? I spent under $175 for groceries on that Odessa trip, I used some of those groceries to make Christmas gifts (candy for the non-dieters, low-sugar homemade jam and low-fat homemade crackers for the weight conscious), and I still have an itsy bit left. I made $175 last for nine weeks. That's under twenty dollars a week, folks! Although, in all fairness, my parents are visiting and they brought me a ten-pound butternut squash, two boxes of cereal, and some fat-free half-and-half, and I have been eating about two meals a week with them. But I also cook for them about once a week, so it evens out. I'm still claiming the $20 a week!
Today's total was a hair under $69. I don't think it'll last a whole 9 weeks, but it's going to have to come close because I still don't have an actual paying job. I've done a little freelance stuff, but it'll be 90 days minimum before I see that check.
