I started my fitness plan yesterday (Yay me, hehe). I decided that I'm going to blog about each exercise/DVD workout that I do. I think it will help me keep track of how I"m feeling, what I liked/disliked about each workout, and just my progress. maybe someone else would like to hear about a workout before trying who knows?
My goal for the next 6 weeks is to workout 3x a day for 30 minutes and one of those days has to be cardio.
Total Body Makeover Yoga
Host: Alanna Zabel
total time 50 mins
5 sections: Warmup
Upper Body Conditioning
Lower Body Conditioning
Strength and Flexibility
What I did:
33 mins total- Warmup, Lower Body conditioning, and Strength and Flexibility.
I thought that starting with yoga would be a gentle ease into my whole fitness plan. While this wasn't the hardest yoga I've ever done (hello 90 minute Bikram class!) this was definitely a challenge after spending 6 weeks sitting on my butt doing absolutely no movement at all. So this was a bit of a shock to my system,
Warmup: The warmup was a lot more challenging than I thought it would be. Some basic calf stretching quickly turned into sun salutations with lots of chatterangas (basically a plank that you move through to a upward dog or a cobra stretch) than right to Down Dog. Now Chatteranga's have always been challenging to me but I could always do Down dogs with the best , but for some reason my body was STRUGGLING through these. My back actually started cramping as I moved from up dog to plank to down dog. But I kept hearing Jillian Michael voice telling me to dig deep, so I did and I made it through.
Lower Body: Whew! My body was feeling fatigue fast through this. I made it through the chair pose pretty good but when we started having to balance on one leg and one arm and then pulling through to standing one legged knee lifts I was feeling the burn big time. I was also having trouble balancing. I won't lie there were times were I stopped and had to take some breaths but I always went back to it.
Strength and Flexibility- Are you kidding me? You want me to do what? Oh you want me to lay on my back while I swing my legs forward and over my head so I'm basically staring at my knees while my lungs feel like they are going to collapse. Yeah this section was way more advanced than I am in yoga but I did what I could. I tried to do the legs over my head staring at my knees thing but the farthest I could get was my legs straight up in the air. The next was the bicycle pose where you lay on your back and hoist your butt up in the air resting on your elbows. I tried and tried and could barely hold my own butt up. At this point I gave up on that pose and did some other poses I'm familiar with. I rejoined her when she started doing back twists and legs lifts.
My body was sore and tired after this workout. I also had a headache of sorts, it sort of felt like the blood was rushing to my head. I was fine after 30 mins or so, I think sometimes when I'm trying to do something challenging I hold my breath a bit which is the exact opposite of what I'm supposed to do.
I actually broke out into a good sweat during this workout. I'd definitely do this workout again. I feel like once I get back into an exercise groove and improve my strength and stamina I could do more of this workout for sure.
Next up tomorrow: Dancercize Salsa!
