Choose your crazy. Yes, Mom I am still on that crazy diet. It is called healthy maintenance.

Tuesday, January 22, 2013

So I called my mom on my last visit. She asked me, " Are you still on that crazy diet? You looked so skinny last summer." Ok..this is the straw that broke this maintainers back. LOL. Plus I have been criticized at work for always being on a diet.

It is ironic that I am eating the healthiest I have eaten in decades, I have maintained a 114 pound weight loss for one year and 4 months. I have stopped food bingeing and my health is great. So this is now a crazy diet?

I will tell you my version of a crazy diet that I have been on for years.
A crazy diet is one where you are constantly depressed and binge eating.
A crazy diet is being addicted to sugar and carbs and doing insane things like driving to three stores to get trigger foods or digging a bag of cookies out of the trash. (That still horrifies me that I did that,)
A crazy diet is gaining and losing weight and getting unhealthy lab reports.

So if society thinks my present diet is crazy that is OK. I say choose your crazy. I know my choice.

I am entering month 4 and one year of maintenance. There are times I still am in a state of wonder that I am finally managing this food addiction for the first time. In other years my maintenance was never stable. It was up and down..with binges.

I am happy to have the support of Spark friends and teams! Thanks to everyone for you encouragement.

Good for you! You are the only one with you 24/7/365 forever, so you have to live with the choices you make.

I think if people have been used to seeing someone as overweight and eating bad and not exercising for a long time and now see you as thin and healthy in your food and activity habits, they right away think maybe something is wrong with their health.

And also, depending on who is making the comments, it usually says more about how they feel about them, not you.

Keep doing what is healthy for you!

All of what you wrote is so true. I am reading the Beck Diet Solution also.I have been maintaining for a year (May 1st), but still struggle at times with the sugar .
Took guts to post what you did about digging the cookies out of the trash. emoticon emoticon

After reading your recent blog I went back and decided to read this one. Hallelujah! Isn't it hard being the only sane person you associate with on a day. Thank God for Spark where sanity reigns. Get used to this honey, it never changes. At least I have one daughter who makes sense and some friends who seem to be somewhat sane. My one friend in Mexico told me her boss encouraged her to take these pills and as an adendum follow the diet that went with them. After one month when she lost weight she said to herself one day. Maybe it is the diet not really the pills. I was so happy when she told me this and encouraged her to read Pierda Kilos literature. Pierda Kilos is the Mexican version of weight watchers and sticks with the original version of the plan. It is excellent.

I think it's amazing that everyone tries all the fad diets, and fail to maintain, then see others getting healthy, staying there, and not realizing the secret is to embrace a healthy lifestyle! Thanks for sharing! Stay strong and keep embracing the lifestyle!

I think that unfortunately too many still fail to see that it is their diets that are crazy! Crazy portion sizes and crazy number of daily calories. All without much exercise!!

Your diet sounds very sane. You sound like you have found peace with food.

Just came across your page tonight and find it very interesting!

Who says change is easy!? I sometimes think people flap away on things, just to say something about something. If they were thinking they would say, U R amazing. Instead they say, still dieting?

When we model peace with ourselves and our decisions we give a gift to the world. They can see what it looks like! So keep on keeping on.

You're so awesome! I think our peers and family get so used to seeing us a certain way (like overweight) that being at a normal weight seems 'too' thin. You're right about those unhealthy labs. It's crazy to squander our health for a bag of chips or cookies.

I'm so proud of you. And I think you're beautiful.

If your Dr. is happy with your health and you are happy (which you clearly are)...then the rest of them are simply ignorant.

Your former self was unhappy and unhealthy and what on earth is sane about that?

Kudos to you on your weight loss success and long term maintenance!! *high five*

I love your blog. It's comforting. The words that you used to describe your crazy diet are the same ones that I use. Addiction, depression, binges... that was my crazy diet too, and it's one that I have to constantly keep in check.

Thanks so much for the dose of validation today! You have a great day!

Love this post!!! You just have to wonder about people-- It reminded me of my mom--years ago I had gone to Jenny Craig and lost over 30 pounds. I maintained for almost 3 years. EVERY time we had a meal with my mother she would make such a big deal---can you eat this? If I cook this will you be able to eat it? Are you allowed to eat this? It drove me crazy!!!

What Nillapepsi said...they are jealous. Or maybe it's lack of control on your mom's part, since moms have this thing about needing to feed their children, and you're not cooperating.

I am definitely with you in this craziness, and it's the best crazy I've ever been. Congrats on passing your one-year maintenance mark. I'm looking forward to doing the same in May...seven months so far is way longer than I ever maintained before.

I have soooo much respect for you for following that 'crazy' diet!

You are totally right I think, in saying 'chose your crazy'. And I often think that all of society has gone mad if it's about food, weight and health.

So I think you should write a book (call it 'Kanoe's crazy diet': KCD) and get rich and hand it out to everyone who is critical of you.

I admire you for sticking with the right choices. Coworkers probably just are jealous and want to have support for their bad choices. Mom probably wants you to take a step back and relax and not have to be so vigilant. I don't know. I, personally, admire you very much. I have been trying for a long time to be somewhere between healthy and normal and it is sooo hard. I find that there is so much temptation and I don't know how to stop wanted so called "treat" foods. It seems it is an addiction and I am walking in the garden of denial about it again. You are awesome for being able not only to lose that weight but to keep it off. I have had to make a lot of changes in my life and it is true that when we change the people around us have a hard time getting used to it. It is different to make healthy choices because the bad ones are so easy. I feel you are getting opposition because you are doing the right thing. Hang in there.

You don't see me much because I have to keep my typing very limited. I have severe pain in my arms and hands esp. on the right side. I miss you and hope you are well. Love, Karen emoticon

people who have always been normal weight or people not concerned with their weight don't understand that the weight battle continues into maintenance because someone who has been obese has to work harder at maintaining weight than a normal. But you just do what you know you need to do.....it's a positive move.
You worked hard to get where you are, you deserve to keep what you worked so hard for. GOOD FOR YOU

It hard when coworkers give you a hard time when YOU are the one being smart and living the healthy life. It's sad when you get similar reactions from family who are supposed to love and support you. The worst for a woman is when it's a mother's disapproval. With my Mom it was opposition to my running.

You know that you're doing the right thing and if your motivation ever wanes you know where to come for support. Hang in there. Year 2 will be year 3 before you know it.

You are doing the right thing - you are making healthy choices, you are staying accountable to yourself, and you are here sharing with us, people who do understand! Some of us have been able to lose at times, but it's the maintenance that really trips us; you are truly an inspiration! Sixteen months is...

If you are crazy, I'm crazy too: and loving it! This way of living is permanent for me: I don't mind calling it a "diet" (as in Beck's Diet Solution) but really it's eternal vigilance. And worth it, worth it, worth it!!
