I ran the third 10K race in the January Freeze series on Saturday and didn't stop my timer until I had been walking around a bit after the finish. I wanted to get my official time so I checked the results on the Club site and I wasn't listed and I think I found out why . When I was trying to find out how to contact them, I saw that headphones were not permitted. As far as I could discover, the only place this was mentioned was in the minutes of a board meeting on January 8th. I searched the site very carefully and checked the registration form for the race.
13. Headphones Ė Darlene asked about whether anyone wearing headphones was disqualified at the Freeze on Saturday. She had walked around at the start telling everyone she saw with headphones that they needed to remove them or they would be disqualified. She saw 5 or 6 people wearing headphones, 4 removed them and one said she wasnít going to and she didnít care. The board discussed the issue again and agreed that we need to stay vigilant in enforcing the no headphone policy, especially since many of our races are run on roads.
I think I must have been disqualified so I sent an email to check and I'm still waiting to see if that was the case.
I only tried running with music because I saw runners doing it during other races including the first two of this series. I was running with headphones for the first time ever as an experiment I didn't even have a playlist so I was hearing things like Brahms Lullaby shuffled with a pretty eclectic mix with. It doesn't really matter that much to me, since I'm not after a trophy but it was very obvious that I was wearing them and during the race, the race monitors would say encouraging things like "good job" as I passed instead of "Hey idiot! Headphones are not permitted."
Lesson learned. Do due diligence.
I'm still looking forward to the final race even though technically I probably won't have completed the set and we are supposed to still be in a deep freeze.
