My Sister's death-please read

Tuesday, January 22, 2013

I normally wouldn't do this. I like to grieve in private, but I need to share this with you.

My sister weighed 340+ pounds, she was around 5'4," she was 38 years old. She smoked cigarettes a lot and was on prescribed medication for depression and COPD and for foot surgery. She had foot surgery on Monday, Jan 14th and died Wednesday, Jan 16th. She had a heel spur removed which required that her achilles tendon be cut and sewn back together. The recovery process would be 3 months of almost complete immobility. Due to my sister's size and a previous car wreck, she was not able to get around very well anyhow.

My sister passed away mostly due to her weight. She had to change the way she slept because of the surgery. They had prescribed her percocettes (?) for pain. The way she slept on Wednesday virtually crushed her. Her weight was too much for her body to bear in the position she was sleeping.

I tell you all this because I know there's a lot of us out there trying to lose weight for one reason or another. Frankly, it could mean the difference between life or death. I had no idea this was so common and I had a difficult time believing it, at first. My sister gave up trying to lose weight and healthy lifestyle, she said she couldn't because of the medication and she couldn't move well.

I want you to know about my sister because if you ever feel like giving up on a healthy lifestyle; if you feel like it's unreachable, I want you to think about the alternative. I'm not trying to scare anyone, I just want you to know that this happens. It's so sad because it didn't have to happen.

I am a Christian and I love the Lord. I know that He has a wonderful plan for all of us. I know that He will guide me and I will follow. I am at peace because I know my sister is at peace.

Please don't give up on your battle for a healthy lifestyle. I promise you that you are worth it and so is everyone in your life. If you ever feel like giving up, please send me a message. I refuse to let anyone else give up.

Sincerely,
Angie

My condolences on the loss of your sister.

Thank you for sharing her (and your) story. It's true - we often think it won't happen to us, that we are the exception to the rule. However, each of us has the potential to be in your sister's situation or in a healthier one. It essentially boils down to us and what we do about it. Thank you for reaching out and sharing. My thoughts are with you and your family as you grieve.

My deepest condolences. I lost my mom last year because of her weight.... she was 480 lbs. and never acknowledged there was a problem. Always blamed her immobility on something else, like arthritis or bad knees. It didn't have to happen. Bless you for sharing your sister's story and being willing to help others. That's what Sparkpeople is all about.

I'm so sorry to hear about the death of your sister. I pray that our Lord and Saviour continue to give you and your family peace and understanding as you'll continue to greive. I hope that everyone who reads this blog think about that someone that they may know that is over weight and need to hear this devastating story. My husband's BFF/like a brother passed October of last year and he was around the same height and weight of your sister. He had been given warnings also by his doctor to get off 200 lbs of his weight, and he always said he couldn't because he loved food. My husband took his death very hard, but by the grace of God he's dealing with it through the help of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

You are so right . I found out that I could do a little each day like laying on my bed and doing leg lifts and sitting in my computer chair I could use my dumb bells. now I can walk a 2000 steps a day. It makes me feel good to do even small things.
I'm so sorry for your loss and keep letting people know that they can do some things by doing small things first.
Prayers for your family.
